Anticipated tenure-track position for a specialist in Creole Languages.

The position would be available from August 1, 2000, and the appointment
made at the Assistant Professor level, although outstanding applicants
may also be considered at the Associate level. All candidates should
have the Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment. The candidate should
have primary field work experience on the Anglophone Creoles of the
Caribbean but further experience with an additional lexifier creole
(e.g. Haitian, Papiamentu, etc.) is highly desireable. Graduate training
should generally be in Linguistics, but candidates with experience in
Anthropology and/or folklore are also desired and welcome. In addition,
candidates should have specific training in language as a cultural or
social construction and also broad familiarity with formal aspects of
language study.

This position is intended to complement an already existing one in
creole studies and is geared towards course offerings in our new Ph.D.
program in Caribbean Studies. Applicants must demonstrate the potential
to establish a research program leading to fundamental contributions in
the field. They are expected to teach broad-based introductory
linguistics courses at the undergraduate level; to advise graduate
students; to teach graduate courses in the field of creole languages.

For the rank of Associate Professor, the applicant must also demonstrate
a strong record of independent research and publication with national
and international recognition.
