Ghanaian Pidgin English in its West African Context.
A sociohistorical and structural analysis. (Includes CD-ROM)
Magnus HUBER (University of Regensburg)
Varieties of English Around the World G24

This first published full-scale study of the Ghanaian variety of West
African Pidgin English (GhaPE) makes extensive use of hitherto
neglected historical material and provides a synchronic account of
GhaPE's structure and sociolinguistics. Special focus is on the
differences between GhaPE and other West African Pidgins, in
particular the development of, and interrelations between, the
different varieties of restructured English in West Africa, from
Sierra Leone to Cameroon.

This monograph further includes an overview of the history of
Afro-European contact languages in Lower Guinea with special emphasis
on the Gold Coast; an outline of the settlement of Freetown, Sierra
Leone, with a description of how and when the transplantation of
Sierra Leonean Krio to other West African countries took place; an
analysis of the linguistic evidence for the origin, development, and
spread of restructured Englishes on the Lower Guinea Coast; an account
of the different varieties of GhaPE and their sociolinguistic status
in the contemporary linguistic ecology of Ghana; as well as a
comprehensive structural description of the "uneducated" variety of
GhaPE.

The book is accompanied by a CD-(ROM) which contains illustrative
material such as spoken GhaPE and photographs.

This book marks the first-ever collection of papers in English on the
acquisition of Japanese as a second language. Its overarching goal is
to broaden and deepen the field of SLA research by focusing on
Japanese rather than on more commonly studied European
languages. Broad in scope and eclectic in approach with chapters by
leading scholars in the field, Studies in the Acquisition of Japanese
as a Second Language offers a survey of the far-ranging field of SLA
research as it applies to Japanese. Chapters include studies on input
and interaction, research into the evaluation of L2 proficiency, and
investigations of the grammatical system that is the product of second
language learning.

Contributions by: Kazue Kanno; Shunji Inagaki and Michael H. Long;
Noriko Iwashita; Junko Ford-Niwa and Noriko Kobayashi; Eric Kellerman,
John van IJzendoorn and Hide Takashima; Makiko Hirakawa; Naoko
Yoshinaga; Naoko Yoshinaga; William O'Grady; Kazue Kanno.

The Second Time Around - Minimalism and L2 Acquisition.
Julia HERSCHENSOHN (UNiversity of Washington)

Linking recent advances in theoretical syntax and empirical research
in language development, the book claims that second language
acquisition is not totally distinct from first language acquisition,
but rather is a replay, a relearning of language. It argues that
Universal Grammar is a template guiding acquisition of L1 while
constraining acquisition of L2. Assuming that a syntactic distinction
crucial for language and its acquisition is the division between
lexical and functional categories, it argues that the key to L2 as
well as L1 acquisition of syntax is the mastery of morphological
features and their linking to functional categories. It thus supports
the availability of UG to the second language learner and the
minimalist claim that cross-linguistic variation is
morpholexical. Constructionism, the hypothesis of L2A proposed in this
account, argues for a period of feature underspecification after loss
of the L1 value, followed by a progressive building of the L2 value
through specific constructions.
