Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences
Project DWDS (Digital Dictionary of the German Language in the 20th
Century)


The project DWDS at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences is
seeking
for a computer linguist and a computer scientist to work on a
project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The project's current aim is to construct a very large linguistically
annotated text database of the German language of the 20th century
where equal weight will be given to the language of literature,
mass media, scientific prose, popular textbooks, practical instructions

and, to the extent possible, spoken language.

Position 1: Computer Scientist:
The candidate will contribute to develop leading-edge text search
and retrieval server products. The focus will be on candidates who
can independently develop significant software product components.

Requirements: masters degree or better in Computer Science,
or related fields, or suitable industry experience; experience
with text analysis and text search systems, database systems.
Areas will include core C/C++ or Java component development in a
Unix-Environment along with benchmarking activities.


Position 2: Computer Linguist:
The candidate will be responsible for the text conversion and annotation
of the above mentioned texts into a TEI-format. He or she will also be
capable of managing and coordinating work of a group of 10-15
free-lancers doing the SGML/XML encoding. Furthermore, the candidate
will contribute to develop finite-state and context-free techniques for
natural language parsing and linguistic text annotation.

Requirements: masters degree or better in computational linguistics,
or related fields, or suitable industry experience; Proficiency in
SGML and/or XML and a strong experience in scripting environments.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills are necessary to
effectively interact with the SGML/XML encoding group. Near native
fluency in German is required.


Both positions are rated BAT-IIa/O (minimum of 65 000 DM per year),
available initially for two years. Applications received by April 5,
