Part-time Lecturer in English Language (60%)


The Faculty of Letters of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The
Netherlands) is offering a part-time lectureship (60%) associated with
the Chair of English Language. The English Language staff provide both
tuition in English linguistics and advanced training in the English
language, as well as classes in medieval English literature. The
Faculty is structured in such a way that classes are composed of
students majoring in a variety of disciplines, not just English
Language and Culture. The English Language group take a
communicative-functional approach, integrating language theory and
language teaching and making extensive use of ICT. The group is
currently seeking to develop a specialism in English language
variation, including colonial and postcolonial English(es).

Tasks:

The lecturer (universitair docent: UD) will provide tuition in English
linguistics and will be a central figure in the extension of that part
of the curriculum that is concerned with social, geographical and
diachronic variation in the English language. The UD will also be
involved in grammar teaching and in faculty-wide courses. He/she will
furthermore be called upon to supervise MA dissertations and to
contribute to language teaching.

The UD will conduct his/her research in the framework of the Faculty
research programme 'The form of language: the principles underlying
language and language use'. He/she will also be expected to carry out
certain administrative and managerial duties.

Requirements:

The lecturer must have a doctorate, preferably in the field of English
Linguistics; native or near-native command of the English language, in
speech and in writing; first-class teaching and interpersonal skills;
proven experience in empirical research; and an active interest in ICT
applications in teaching and research. The successful candidate will
be expected to acquire Dutch within two years of appointment.

Particulars:

The position is initially for two years; thereafter tenure is
available to suitable candidates. Date of appointment: 1 August 2000,
or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary will be in the range NLG
4110-8602 (Euro 1865-3903) per month.
