John Benjamins Publishing announces new work in Pragmatics and Discourse:

Turn-Taking in Japanese Conversation.
A Study in Grammar and Interaction.
Hiroko TANAKA (University of Essex)
Pragmatics & Beyond NS 56
US & Canada: 1 55619 819 1 / USD 79.00 (Hardcover)
Rest of world: 90 272 5070 7 / NLG 158.00 (Hardcover)

This book explores the interpretation of grammar and turn-taking in
Japanese talk-in-interaction from the perspective of conversation
analysis. It pays special attention to the projectability patterns of
turns in Japanese in comparison to English. Through qualitative and
quantitative methods, it is shown that the postpositional grammatical
structure and the predicate-final orientation in Japanese regularly result
in a relatively delayed projectability of the possible point at which a
current turn may become recognisably complete in comparison to English.
Prior to such points, projectability is often limited to the progressive
anticipation of small increments of talk. However, participants are able
to achieve smooth speaker transitions with minimal gap or overlap through
the use of specific grammatical and prosodic devices for marking possible
points at which a transition may become relevant.

Getting Acquainted in Conversation.
A study of initial interactions.
Jan SVENNEVIG (Agder College, Norway)
Pragmatics & Beyond NS 64
US & Canada:1 55619 942 2 / USD 95.00 (Hardcover)
Rest of world: 90 2725078 2 / NLG 190.00 (Hardcover)

What makes a 'getting acquainted' a recognizable conversational
activity, and how are interpersonal relationships established in a
first conversation? This book presents a theoretical framework for the
study of relationship management in conversation and an empirical
study of a corpus of initial interactions. It provides detailed
descriptions of the sequential resources unacquainted interlocutors
use in order to:

- generate self-presentation
- introduce topics
- establish common contextual resources

It is argued that these sequential patterns embody conventionalized
procedures for establishing an interpersonal relationship involving
some degree of:

- solidarity (mutual rights and obligations)
- familiarity (mutual knowledge of personal background)
- mutual affect (emotional commitment)

The sequential analysis is based on a conversation analytic approach,
while the interpretive framework consists of pragmatic theories of
politeness, conversational style and common ground.

Analysing Professional Genres.
Anna TROSBORG (ed.) (The Aarhus School of Business)
Pragmatics & Beyond NS 74
US & Canada: 1 55619 921 X / USD 69.00 (Hardcover)
Rest of world: 90 272 5089 8 / NLG 138.00 (Hardcover)

An understanding of genres in communication (written and spoken) is
essential to professional success. This volume studies situationally
appropriate responses in professional communication in face-to-face
interaction and distance communication, from a socio-cognitive point
of view. A traditional rhetorical approach does not give much insight
in the ways in which genres are embedded in communicative activity or
how actors draw upon genre knowledge to perform effectively. However,
if genres are considered as embedded in social interaction "as
typified forms of typified circumstances", the rich dynamic aspects of
genre knowledge can be disclosed.

The chapters deal with genre knowledge in various settings,
illustrating the impact of time, place, medium, skills and purpose,
and some chapters deal with genre analysis in a broader sense giving
ideas for applied genre analysis.

The book is of interest to professionals and scholars in communication
studies, discourse analysis, and social and cognitive science.

Handbook of Pragmatics. 1997 Installment now available.
Jef VERSCHUEREN, Jan-Ola ÖSTMAN, Jan BLOMMAERT and Chris BULCAEN (eds.)
US & Canada: 1 55619 527 3 / USD 89.00 (Looseleaf)
Rest of world: 90 272 2173 1 / NLG 178.00 (Looseleaf)

The Handbook of Pragmatics provides easy access for scholars with
widely divergent backgrounds but with convergent interests in the use
and functioning of language to the different topics, traditions and
methods which together make up the field of Pragmatics, broadly
conceived as "the cognitive, social and cultural study of language and
communication". The Handbook of Pragmatics is an annually updated
state-of-the-art publication. The main body of the Handbook is
produced in loose-leaf format in a handsome 3-ring binder and is
accompanied by a bound Manual which contains all necessary background
information and user guidelines
