***** TWO LINGUISTICS PHD STUDENTSHIPS *****
Department of Linguistics and English Language
********* University of Durham, UK *********

The Department of Linguistics and English Language at the
University of Durham is offering two PhD studentships, renewable
up to three years, starting 1 October 2000. The studentships
cover fees at the Home/European Union (EU) rate plus maintenance.
(If a non-EU candidate wins an award, the Department may decide
on an individual basis to supplement the award with a further
grant for the difference between EU fees and overseas fees.
Please contact the Department for details.)

Qualified candidates must hold, or expect to hold, by the academic
year 1999-2000, a minimum of an upper second class honours
undergraduate degree (or the equivalent, e.g. high B+ average
documented by transcript) with training in linguistics. Preference
will be given to applicants with a strong Master's degree (or
equivalent) in Theoretical Linguistics, Language Acquisition, or
 Applied Linguistics.

To apply, send for application materials to the address below.
These materials will consist of a University application form (also
downloadable, with accompanying guidance notes for completion, at
 http://www.dur.ac.uk/~dcm0www/pg_form.htm and a departmental
questionnaire. For the former, University transcripts (and official
TOEFL or IELTS scores, where applicable), a (short) PhD thesis
proposal--covering research area, relevance and broad timetable--and
two letters of recommendation are required. Please note that only
complete University applications can be considered, the two letters
of reference inclusive. The deadline for submission is 8 June 2000.
(Qualified candidates who have already applied for doctoral study
starting in October 2000 will automatically be considered.)

These awards will be subject to annual renewal, dependent on
 satisfactory progress.

The Department of Linguistics and English Language has over
50 students at MA and PhD level studying Theoretical Linguistics,
           Language Acquisition, and Applied Linguistics.
