opportunity for bright dynamic graduates in the fields of Linguistics or
Computer Science to study for a PhD. We have one studentship to
commence in October 2000. The studentship will be awarded to study one
(or more) of the following topics in Computational Linguistics:

    document generation (including text generation):
        architectures;
        corpus analysis;
        diagrammatic reasoning;
        discourse;
        evaluation;
        hybrid generation;
        implementation;
        layout;
        multilinguality;
        multimodality;
        representation languages;
        pragmatics;
        semantics;
        tools

    lexicons:
        corpus analysis;
        evaluation;
        lexical statistics;
        lexicalized grammars;
        lexicography;
        lexicon induction from text;
        multilinguality;
        representation;
        tools;
        tuning;
        word sense disambiguation;

    natural language interfaces:
        dialogue;
        interface design;
        tools;

    information extraction:
        text mining;

Students work closely with established researchers, usually contributing
to existing funded projects. The ITRI offers an excellent environment for
apprenctice academics who have opportunities to meet internationally
renowned researchers in the field, to present their own work to a friendly
but discerning audience and to attend conferences, workshops and training
courses.

Applicants should have a good honours degree or equivalent in
Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or Linguistics (or be
expecting to achieve this, if final year students.

EPSRC studentships are restricted to UK or EU residents. Residents of
the UK are eligible for fees and a maintenance allowance; other EU
residents are only eligible for fees (and so would need to be able to
support themselves during their studies). All EPSRC students attend a
Graduate School in the 2nd or 3rd year of their PhD. The EPSRC baseline
rate of maintenance allowance is currently approx #6,620 per annum. For
further general information on EPSRC studentships, please consult
the EPSRC web site: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/ .

Further information on the Institute's research programme can be found
on the ITRI home page ( http://www.itri.bton.ac.uk ), and information
about students and how to apply on our research students page
( http://www.itri.bton.ac.uk/students ).
