PROFESSOR OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS, INCLUDING THE DIDACTICS OF LANGUAGES

At the department of Language and Communication

The discipline concerns the study of firstly guided and secondly
unguided second language acquisition, as well as the factors
influencing this process, such as didactic procedures and
socio-cultural aspects.  Within the broad multidisciplinary field of
Applied Linguistics, the University of Groningen concentrates on the
area of Educational Linguistics, especially in connection with second
language and foreign language acquisition. This area requires a
multidisciplinary orientation, and specifically utilises knowledge and
methodology from the fields of linguistics, psycholinguistics,
psychology and cognitive psychology and educational linguistics as
well as Computers and Humanities (in connection with Computer Assisted
Language Learning).

The appointee will participate in the teaching programme in the broad
field of Applied Linguistics, in particular in the specialisation
programme Applied Linguistics. The function will involve a second
appointment at the University Teacher Training Centre (Universitair
Centrum voor de Lerarenopleiding, UCLO). Within this centre the
appointee's tasks include studying and developing education in the
humanities in secondary education and post-graduate courses in
educational linguistics for secondary teachers.  The research, which
is carried out within the research institute CLCG and the research
school BCN, is directed towards the areas of Applied Linguistics
referred to above.

FUNCTION
- Co-ordinating and participating in the teaching programme referred to
  above
- Co-ordinating and participating in research
- Supervising PhD dissertations
- Carrying out administrative and managerial tasks
- Developing the national and international contacts of the department

PROFILE
We are looking for candidates who want to enthusiastically manage a
team that follows the latest developments in the fields of education,
politics and culture closely.  We naturally assume that candidates -
have received a PhD in the field of Applied Linguistics or a related
discipline.  - are experienced teachers and have an excellent research
reputation in the field of Applied Linguistics and Educational
Linguistics in particular.  - are thoroughly acquainted with Computer
Assisted Language Learning (CALL) - are skilled managers and
organisers - are capable of stimulating an interest in the field -
want to meet the challenge of working in a dynamic faculty - are
willing to live in or near Groningen.

THE UNIVERSITY OF GRONINGEN OFFERS
An appointment as full professor (A) from 1 September 2000. The salary
is according to university standards from a minimum of NLG 8,645 to a
maximum of NLG 12,672 gross per month depending on experience and
qualifications.
