Call for Papers
The Graduate Student Organization of the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese of the University of Texas at Austin
11th Colloquium on Hispanic & Luso-Brazilian Literatures and
Romance Languages
Saturday, March 24th, 2001
Texas Union, University of Texas at Austin

We proudly present Keynote Speakers:

Prof. Ellen Bialystok (Psycholinguistics, Bilingualism and Language
Acquisition, York University)
Prof. Edward Subirats (Hispanic Literature, New York University)

Abstracts:  The submission will consist of two pages.  The first page
will include the title of the paper, the author's name, panel title (if
applicable), address, telephone and email address.  The second page will
include the title of the paper and a single-spaced abstract not to
exceed 400 words.

To be considered, the abstract must be post marked by December 10, 2000
and follow the preceding guidelines.  Please do not submit entries
electronically.

Abstracts  may be submitted individually or under a panel consisting of
3 presenters.  Groups submitting panels should send abstracts in the
same envelope and include the panel title on the pages with the
presenters' personal information.

Papers: Papers must not exceed 3100 words (maximum reading time is 20
minutes).  The completed paper as it will be presented must be sent in
to the address below and post marked by March 1st, 2001.
No papers will be read in-absentia.

Dear Colleagues:

At the ACL 2000 meeting in Hong Kong the executive committee decided to set up
a mentoring service as described below in the announcement which will appear
in the call for papers for ACL 2001. I have agreed to organize this service
for ACL 2001. The announcement clearly describes the goals of this service and
how it will operate.

Now I need to assemble a set of volunteers. The criteria for being a volunteer
are very simple--your desire to serve ACL in this manner and your specific
interest or knowledge about particular regions of the world. I would like to
collect a large number of volunteers so that I can assure you that a volunteer
will get AT MOST ONE paper. So I do hope you will volunteer. If you agree to
help  please provide me the following information.

MENTORING SERVICE:

ACL is organizing a mentoring (coaching) service for authors from regions of
the world where English is not the language of scientific exchange. Many
authors from these regions, although able to read the scientific literature in
English, have little or no experience in writing papers in English for
conferences such as the ACL meetings. They may also have some trouble with the
style of the presentation of the material that is expected for ACL.

The service will be arranged as follows. A set of potential mentors will be
identified by Aravind Joshi, who has agreed to organize this service for ACL
2001. An author who would like to take advantage of this service must send a
draft of his/her paper to

The author must send ONE copy of the paper (HARD COPY by regular
mail or by FAX) by no later than DECEMBER 15 2000. The author should try to
make the draft as complete as possible in order to get the best advice. An
appropriate mentor will be assigned to your paper and the mentor will get back
to the author at least two weeks before the deadline for the submission to ACL
2001 program committee.

Please note that this service is for the benefit of the authors as described
above. It is not a general mentoring service for authors to improve their
papers.
