Alan Garnham (University of Sussex, UK):
Mental Models and the Interpretation of Anaphora

This is a volume in the Essays in Cognitive Psychology Series
published by Psychology Press. ISBN 1-84169-128-3 2000 192pp. hbk
US$49.95 / UK£29.95

>>From the manuscript reviews:
"This is an excellent book. ... The major strengths are its scope of
coverage and the clarity of the writing ... I am happy to have had the chance
to review it" -- Peter C. Gordon, University of North Carolina at Chapel
 Hill, USA
"This book is a timely and extremely useful summary of the psycholinguistic
literature on anaphora and reference. ... it should be on any
psycholinguist's bookshelf." -- Anthony Sanford, Glasgow University, UK

This book presents an overview of the author's research on anaphor
interpretation set within the context of the general literature on
anaphora from the disciplines of psycholinguistics, philosophy,
linguistics, and computational linguistics. The work is presented in
the framework of the mental models theory of comprehension, and it is
argued that the notion of a mental model is essential to the detailed
description of the processes of anaphor resolution. Initial chapters
clearly present the necessary background on mental models and anaphora
for the author's subsequent discussion of the major strands of his own
research on deep and surface anaphora, reference into anaphoric
islands, the role of implicit causality in anaphor resolution, and the
use of pronouns to refer to characters introduced by gender
stereotyped role names. The book concludes with a summary of the
central aspects of a mental models theory of anaphor
interpretation. For details of how to order, please visit
