Subject: World Wide Words update

The website of World Wide Words has undergone significant
changes this weekend (30 September). The most important is that
its URL is now < http://www.worldwidewords.org >.

At the same time, the site has been revamped with a new
navigation system, a full-text search facility has been added,
and parts of the site have been reorganised. This aim is to make
what is now a rather large site (700+ pages) easier for visitors
to find their way around. We currently receive about 120,000
page hits a month, so this is an increasingly important
consideration.

The focus of World Wide Words is on etymology and new words,
though the mix also includes book and CD-ROM reviews, usage
queries, notes on words in the news, and answers to questions.
The approach is non-technical and will be of interest to anyone
who is intrigued by the language.

A newsletter is sent each weekend to 9200+ subscribers in at
least 97 countries, who cover a wide spectrum of professional
and private interest in the English language. Subscriber numbers
have increased threefold in the two years since it first began
to be hosted on the LINGUIST list server, so I am more than ever
grateful to Antony Aristar and colleagues for their help.
