***FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS***

The German Association for Catalan Studies (Deutscher
Katalanistenverband e.V.) calls for paper proposals for a linguistic
panel on

VERBAL PERIPHRASES IN ROMANCE LANGUAGES
IN THE LIGHT OF CURRENT GRAMMATICAL THEORIES

to be held within the 27th German Conference on Romance Languages at
Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich (Germany), October 7th - 10th,
2001.

This panel is intended to focus on all synchronic and diachronic aspects
of periphrastic expression of time, aspect and modality in Romance and
welcomes contributions with different theoretical backgrounds.
Approaches to the description and explanation of verbal periphrases'
development and functions may be formal as well as functional,
typological or cognitive. The panel takes Catalan and the other
Ibero-Romance languages as a starting point, but all Romance languages
(including Romance-based creoles) may be considered.

PAPER PROPOSALS:

Please send a 1-page abstract, including your e-mail, snail mail address
and affiliation, to the following co-organizers of the panel:

Claus D. Pusch / Andreas Wesch
Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet
Romanisches Seminar

Fax +49 - 7 61 - 2 03 31 95
e-mail <pusch at uni-freiburg.de> or <weschand at uni-freiburg.de>

Abstracts in electronic form, attached to an e-mail message, are
strongly recommended. Abstracts and papers may be presented in German,
all Romance languages, and English.

MMM3	CALL FOR PAPERS

THIRD MEDITERRANEAN MEETING ON MORPHOLOGY

E-MAIL: mmm.barcelona at iula.upf.es

The Third Mediterranean Meeting on Morphology (MMM3) will be held
September 20-23, 2001 in Barcelona. As in the past, the conference
will be organized by the MMM-committee, Geert Booij (Free University of
Amsterdam), Angeliki Ralli (University of Patras), and Sergio Scalise
(University of Bologna) in conjunction with hosting institution. MMM3
will be hosted by the Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada of
Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, and the local coordinator for the
meeting is Janet DeCesaris.

Continuing in the MMM tradition, our aim is to discuss issues in
morphology in a pleasant atmosphere. There are approximately 20 slots
for papers. Each paper will be allotted 30 minutes for presentation and
10 minutes for discussion. The conference organizers have planned a
full-day excursion for Sunday, Sept. 23, so that an informal gathering
of morphologists will be possible.

Abstracts must be submitted via e-mail. Abstracts should be no longer
than one page (10 point) and should be sent to the following address:
mmm.barcelona at iula.upf.es

Please send your abstracts as attachments in WORD, preferably WORD 7.
The attachment file should consist of one page with your name,
affiliation, address, e-mail address, and the title of your paper, and
another page with the anonymous abstract. Receipt of abstracts will be
acknowledged.

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is: April 3, 2001. No late
submissions will be accepted.

The authors of papers accepted for presentation will receive letters to
that effect the first week of June, 2001. All authors of abstracts
submitted will receive the preliminary program for the conference via
e-mail.

The conference will be held at Pompeu Fabra University, in the heart of
Barcelona. Barcelona has become one of the most popular tourist
destinations in Europe, and we would strongly encourage you to make
travel plans early if you are planning to attend MMM3. There are direct
flights to Barcelona from many cities in Europe, as well as from several
cities in North America. The Barcelona airport is close to the city
itself and train and bus service, as well as taxis, are available.
Excellent train service (Talgo trains) from Paris, Montpellier, Geneva
and Madrid is also available.

At this time (October 17, 2000) we are working on the organizational
details of the conference and as a result not all prices have been set.
We estimate that the conference fee will be 15,000 pesetas (currently ~
US$80), the conference dinner approximately 5000 pesetas (~ $28) and the
optional full-day excursion, which is planned for Sunday, Sept. 23,
approximately 8,000 pesetas. The second circular will contain specific
information concerning lodging. Also, our website at
http://www.iula.upf.es/mmm3.htm
will be updated regularly, and would ask you to check there for
additional information.

The organizing committee has selected the following as the topics for
this conference:

1. The borderline between syntax and morphology (compounds versus
phrases, criteria of demarcation, periphrasis, typology of European
languages in terms of the division of labor between morphology and
syntax, can phrases block the formation of complex words? etc.).

2. Prosodic constraints in morphology (which roles do prosodic
constraints play in restricting morphological processes, the choice
between competing morphological processes? Are they input or output
constraints?).
