The Department of Linguistics at Yale University expects to make an
appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in the field of
phonology, effective as of the academic year 2001-2002. Candidates
should be assured of completing the requirements for the Ph.D. by the
summer of 2001 at the latest. In addition to a basic sequence of
phonology courses, the appointee will be expected to be able to teach
both introductory and advanced courses in linguistics, and evidence of
teaching experience will be an advantage.  Background and experience
in linguistic phonetics will also be important, since we hope that the
person appointed will be in a position to take advantage of our
relation to Haskins Laboratories, a unique and invaluable resource for
the study of phonetics and related areas in the Yale community.

Applicants should send a current CV, two or three representative
pieces of research and the names of potential references by 15
December, 2000, to: Chair, phonology search committee; Department of
Linguistics, 318 HGS, Box 208236 Yale Station, New Haven, CT
06520-8236. Please do NOT have letters of recommendation sent to us
before they are explicitly requested: any such unsolicited letters
that are received will be disregarded in the appointment process. We
hope to interview potential candidates at the Linguistic Society of
America Annual Meeting in Washington, DC in January, 2001, and
additional applications may be submitted at that time.
