My heartfelt thanks to those of you who responded to my request for
materials for a course in Varieties of American English.  Most suggestions
pointed me toward Wolfram and Schilling-Estes' AMERICAN ENGLISH, but there
were other texts that people have used either to supplement AMERICAN ENGLISH
or as a resource.  And nearly everyone mentioned the video "American
Tongues" and the PBS series THE STORY OF ENGLISH segments "Black on White"
and "Pioneers! oh Pioneers".  Sources mentioned are listed below with the
