Department Chair-Intensive English Program

The American Language Program at the University of Georgia announces a
full-time administrative position starting Fall, 2001.

The department head is expected to participate in a range of activities
that include educational needs assessment, program and project
development, instructional materials development, instruction, program
evaluation, and analysis of problems, opportunities, or issues of
demonstrable relevance to the mission of the department.  Specific
responsibilities of the department head include but are not limited to:

a.	Administrative direction of the department;
b.	Existing and new program development;
c.	Formulation and recommendation of proposed policies;
d.	Administration of rules, regulations, and University policies;
e.	Serving as a Designated School Officer (DSO) for immigration
matters;
f.	Faculty and staff assignments;
g.	Recommendations of appointments, reappointments, promotions,
dismissals or non-renewal of contracts to the Director of the
Educational Programs Unit;
h.	Preparation and management of the departmental budget;
i.	Expenditure of departmental funds and the care and use of
departmental property;
j.	Provision of academic, administrative, and fiscal reports as
necessary;
k.	Evaluation and assessment of the performance of departmental faculty
and staff;
l.	Establishment and maintenance of partnerships with academic and
student service departments on the university campus;
m.	Establishment and maintenance of a professional, supportive and
collegial atmosphere;
n.	Maintaining flexibility and awareness of changes in the department
and organization and in national and international trends in
international educational exchange; and
o.	Contributing to the team effort by assuming similar duties and
responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the Educational Programs
Unit.

In addition, the department head is expected to participate actively in
local, regional, and national professional organizations.  The
department head is also expected to submit articles for publication in
professional journals in the fields of international education and ESL
administration. Funds for professional activities in international
education and ESL administration may be provided by the department, if
available.

As the administrator of the American Language Program, an intensive
English language program at The University of Georgia, the department
head is eligible for public service faculty rank according to the
guidelines stipulated in The University of Georgia Public Service
Academic Rank Guidelines for Appointments and Promotion.  In all
matters, the department head is accountable to the Director of the
Educational Programs Unit and the Director of the Georgia Center for
Continuing Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  (1) Master's degree, doctorate preferred; (2)
Three years effective administrative experience in a university or
college intensive English program; (3) Knowledge of and experience in
working with Immigration and Naturalization Service rules and
regulations governing internationals in Non-immigrant (F-1) student
status; (5) Proven record of new program development and delivery; (4)
Proven record of marketing and recruitment for a university or college
intensive English program; (6) Professional publications and
presentations and active involvement in professional organizations,
particularly Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
and NAFSA: Association of International Educators and (7) Excellent
written and oral communication skills.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: (1) Knowledge of and experience in
distance education and computer-assisted instruction in English as a
second language; (2) Proficiency in a foreign language; and (3)
Experience working abroad.

DEADLINES:  The successful candidate will be expected to start work no
later than August 1, 2001.

administering an intensive English language program in a university; (2)
a current curriculum vitae; (3) unofficial transcripts of graduate
course work; the successful candidate will be required to produce

references who can address the applicant's qualifications for this
position as described.  To ensure full consideration, applications must
be received by May 21, 2001.  Some preliminary interviews may take place
at the NAFSA annual conference May 27 - June 1, 2001.  Applications
