non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment

Reuters seeks an energetic and highly motivated Language Technologist
for a one-year placement within Reuters Chief Technology Office.
The post would particularly suit an experienced academic looking for
a sabbatical placement or a recent PhD graduate seeking to gain
industrial experience.

The position would suit candidates with a NLP background who are
interested in diversifying, or alternatively, candidates who have
an IR background but who have interest and knowledge of NLP
techniques. We seek candidates with good fundamental knowledge who
wish to broaden their interests and see their expertise applied in
a practical business context. Candidates with a PhD are preferred,
although those with relevant experience are also invited to apply.
Areas of interest include:

* Text classification and coding
* Document summarisation

* Information retrieval, including cross-language information retrieval
* Information extraction
* Machine translation
* Navigation of unstructured data
* Question answering systems
* Speech recognition & synthesis

Responsibilities include the investigation and evaluation of new

have a major impact on the business, and assisting in the transfer
of these technologies into the business units. You must be a good
team-worker, a good communicator, self-motivated and eager to learn.
Good programming experience and a willingness to tackle a wide range
of problems are essential. The successful candidate will join a
close knit group of highly qualified and motivated individuals who
are based in London. It is hoped that the placement will start in
October 2001 or asap thereafter. Candidates are therefore encouraged
to submit applications at their earliest convenience.

should be addressed (preferably via email) to:
