Workshop on American Indigenous Languages
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
Santa Barbara, CA
April 26-28, 2002

The Linguistics department at the University of California, Santa
Barbara announces its fifth annual Workshop on American Indigenous
Languages (WAIL), which provides a forum for the discussion of
theoretical and descriptive linguistic studies of indigenous languages
of the Americas.  Our invited keynote speaker is Spike Gildea from the
University of Oregon.

Anonymous abstracts are invited for talks on any topic in linguistics.
Talks will be 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion.
Individuals may submit abstracts for one single and one co-authored
paper.  Abstracts should be 500 words or less and can be submitted by
hard copy or email.

For hard copy submissions, please send five copies of your abstract
and a 3x5 card with the following information: (1) name; (2)
affiliation; (3) mailing address; (4) phone number; (5) email address;
(6) title of your paper.

Email submissions are encouraged.  Include the information from the
3x5 card (above) in the body of the email message with the abstract as

General Information: Santa Barbara is situated on the Pacific Ocean
near the Santa Ynez mountains.  The UCSB campus is located near the
Santa Barbara airport.  Participants may also choose to fly into LAX
airport in Los Angeles which is approximately 90 miles south of the
campus.  Shuttle buses run between LAX and Santa Barbara.  Information
about hotel accommodations will be posted on the web.

Dear colleagues

We are happy to announce the 8th Himalayan Languages Symposium. It will be
hosted by the Institute of Linguistics, Section of Comparative Linguistics,
University of Berne, Prof. Roland Bielmeier (director).

The Himalayan Languages Symposium brings together scholars working on
languages and language communities of the greater Himalayan region:
north-western and north-eastern India, Nepal, Bhutan and the Tibetan
plateau, northern Burma and Sichuan, and Nuristan, Baltistan and the
Burushaski-speaking area in the west. Abstracts for presentations from all
fields of linguistics are invited.

During the 8th Himalayan Languages Symposium we plan to hold a workshop on
Tibetan dialects. Possible topics include:

- Field reports
- Synchronic and diachronic descriptions
- Corpus-based analyses of phonetic, phonological and grammatical systems
- Semantic and lexical studies
- Comparative studies and historical reconstruction
- Language change: from preclassical Tibetan to the modern spoken dialects
- Dialect geography in linguistic Tibet

Participants intending to present a paper are requested to submit an
abstract of no more than one page. Abstracts may be submitted in electronic
form (preferably as an attachment in Mac MS Word format). We request that
the paper be held in one of the major Western languages, as our institute
does not have the capacity to provide translators.

Abstract should be received by: 1 April, 2002
Acceptance sent by: 1 May, 2002
Symposium: 19-22 September, 2002
