THE PHONOLOGY OF PORTUGUESE
Maria Helena Mateus and Ernesto d'Andrade, both at the University of Lisbon

(The Phonology of the World's Languages)

In this book, the authors provide an accurate description of the
phonological system of Portuguese, comparing the main phenomena of the
two most widely extended varieties of the language within the light of
current phonological theories. This book's importance and interest lie
in the unique characteristics that give Portuguese a special place
among the Romance languages.

THE PHONOLOGY OF STANDARD CHINESE
San Duanmu, University of Michigan

(The Phonology of the World's Languages)

This is the first comprehensive study of Chinese phonology. It covers
several areas that were previously thought to be either absent in
Chinese, or not phonological issues, e. g. stress, the definition of
the word, the word length problem, and the word order problem. It also
offers new analyses of several traditional topics, such as the
phonemic inventory, allophonic variation, syllable structure, the [r]
suffix, tone, and Tone 3 Sandhi. Unnecessary jargon is avoided and
relevant theories are introduced in a non-technical way, so that the
contents are accessible to a broader audience.
