 ==========================================================================
The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Research in Semantics - MultiLingual Theory and Technologies

Ref: MLTT/010207

2 positions open from February 2001

XRCE Grenoble Laboratory is a world leader in natural language,
distributed systems, and knowledge management research. It forms an
integral part of Xerox's research culture with sister laboratories in
Cambridge (UK) and Palo Alto (PARC, California).

The MultiLingual Theory and Technology Group has two open positions
for researchers in semantic processing of natural language texts. In
collaboration with a group of researchers, the candidates will
investigate and elaborate state-of-the-art techniques for representing
the contents of natural language texts, for merging these contents
with background information (such as ontologies) and for performing
some reasoning on the basis of such representations. The resulting
techniques will be applied to tasks such as knowledge extraction from
unrestricted texts.

Research Focus & Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant
discipline e.g. computer science, linguistics, mathematics etc.
Hands-on experience with applying a wide range of NLP techniques is
also desirable. Proficiency in English is required.

XRCE offers excellent salaries and benefits (and relocation package),
excellent computing facilities and the opportunity to work in a
leading international research institute. The successful candidates
will be located in Grenoble (France), in the foothills of the Alps,
providing access to some of the best outdoors in the world (activities
in this region include: snowboarding, skiing, golfing, hiking,
kayaking, paragliding, rock climbing, fishing etc.). Please refer to
the XRCE webpages for further information regarding this position and
on our research centre: http://www.xrce.xerox.com.

The positions are permanent and are open now. Applications for
sabbaticals are also welcomed.

Applications should include the reference MLTT010207 and
should be sent to following address:

Mr. Christophe Mitenne

integral part of Xerox's research culture with sister laboratories in
Cambridge (UK) and Palo Alto (PARC, California).

The MultiLingual Theory and Technology Group has an open position for
a post-doc, for a duration 18 months, starting in May 2001. In
collaboration with a small group of other researchers, the candidate
will elaborate state-of-the-art robust language components for
English, based on our new system for text analysis and on existing
language resources. The primary focus is on expanding our English
dependency grammar, with a view of applying it to higher-level
linguistic processes (coreference, word sense & structural
disambiguations, paraphrase, mapping onto knowledge representation).
Those linguistic components will be used and tested in a number of
large-scale applications, such as knowledge extraction in genomics.

Research Focus & Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant
discipline e.g. computer science, linguistics, mathematics etc.
Hands-on experience with applying NLP techniques to real texts is a
must. The candidate should be a native speaker of English.

XRCE offers competitive salaries, excellent computing facilities and
the opportunity to work in a leading industry-geared research
institute.

The successful candidate will be located in Grenoble (France), in the
