Position: Second Language Literacy

Rank and Salary:

Assistant to Associate Professor - Tenure Track.  Ph.D. in Linguistics
or related field.  ABD applicants will be considered at the assistant
professor rank if doctorate is completed by August 2001.  Salary
commensurate with rank and experience.

Qualifications:

Required doctorate in Applied Linguistics or related field.  Expertise
in second language literacy and in the pedagogy of developmental
reading and writing.  Familiarity with multicultural k-12 classrooms
in the U.S. Demonstrated potential for continued scholarly activity.

Preferred:

Demonstrated ability to teach in an institution of higher education.
Experience teaching in a K-12 setting.  Experience in program
development.

Responsibilities:

The department offers a B.A. and M.A. in Linguistics and an M.A. in
TESOL.  Duties include teaching introductory and advanced courses in
applied linguistics to students in these programs, as well as
developmental reading and writing.  The normal teaching load is four
three-unit courses per semester plus advising and committee work.
Excellence in teaching and continued scholarly, professional activity
will be a requirement for retention and promotion.

Starting Date:  August 23, 2001

QUALIFICATIONS:

M.A. or equivalent in one of the following areas and coursework
completed or in progress in the other: Extensive experience in
teaching composition/reading, including developmental reading and
writing.  Demonstrated excellence in teaching composition/reading at
the undergraduate level.  Awareness of and sensitivity to the
educational needs of a multicultural population.  Preference given to
those active in professional development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teach undergraduate course in developmental reading and writing.  Hold
regular office hours.  Work cooperatively with program coordinators
and staff.  Participate in assessment and evaluation activities.

SALARY RANGE:	

Commensurate with rank and experience.
