REFLECTIONS ON MULTILITERATE LIVES

Edited by Diane Belcher (Ohio State University) &
Ulla Connor (Indiana University at Indianapolis)

All those interested or involved in the language debates--English only
vs. English plus; the so-called "standard" vs. many varieties of
English; monolingual vs. bilingual education--will benefit from the
essays and interviews collected by Belcher and Connor. Read on as a
group of highly successful professionals demonstrate the power and
rewards of multiliteracy. Andrea Lunsford, Professor of English,
Stanford University

Belcher and Connor have brought together a fascinating collection of
narratives of successful second language acquisition, which will be of
interest to all language teachers and researchers. These first person
accounts increase our understanding of the impact of L2 literacy
acquisition on identity, and powerfully demonstrate the role played by
social, cultural, historical and institutional factors in language
development. Jill Bell, York University

DESCRIPTION
Reflections on Multiliterate Lives is a collection of personal
accounts, in narrative and interview format, of the formative literacy
experiences of highly successful second language users, all of whom
are professional ademics. Representing fourteen countries of origin,
the contributors, who are well known specialists in language teaching
as well as a variety of other fields in the social and physical
sciences, compellingly recount in their own words their past and
present struggles and successes as learners of language and of much
else.
