The University of Central Lancashire, based in Preston, England, is
looking for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Deaf Studies.

The appointee will play a part in teaching (of BSL and/or Deaf Studies
and/or Interpreting), research, assessment and administration as part of
an established Deaf Studies team.

Deaf Studies @ UCLAN
The Deaf Studies team currently includes 13 members of academic/project
staff, plus interpreter/translators and administrative staff. It is
responsible for a Deaf Studies undergraduate programme, an access to HE
programme for Deaf students, BSL teaching at a range of levels, plus a
postgraduate BSL/English Interpreting programme. The team has a growing
research culture, including externally-funded research projects and a
number of research students.

Deaf Studies teaching provision was independently audited in November
2000 as part of the regular national Quality Assurance Agency
mechanisms for assuring the quality of awards, and played a full part
in the Department's outstanding 24/24 grading (see
http://www.qaa.ac.uk for full details). QAA results across all
Faculties put the University in the top 10% in the country.

The University of Central Lancashire (originally established as the
Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge in 1828) is now one of the ten
largest Universities in the UK based upon actual student numbers. It has
invested over 77 million BP in providing a modern, state of the art
working and learning environment over the last ten years. The University
is recognised as a UK leader in widening participation in higher education.
 95% of graduates are either in work or further study six months after
graduation.

The town of Preston (population c.115,000) is located in the centre of the
North West region of England. Two thirds of the North West is covered by
spectacular countryside including two National Parks and the largest lakes
and highest mountain in England. The North West lays claim to being the
UK's most culturally diverse regional centre outside London, featuring a
legendary sporting tradition including five Premier League soccer teams,
three internationally renowned orchestras, the world's 14th-ranked
international passenger airport and a thriving tourist industry along the
North West Coast.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of this post include:

* providing high quality teaching, learning, assessment and academic
advice for students in areas within and complementary to the existing
programme of modules and courses in Deaf Studies.

* keeping records of student progress and making these available as
appropriate.

* contributing to Deaf Studies research and consultancy.

* contributing to the Deaf Studies communications programme of
internal and external liaison and partnership activities.

* taking a role in the exploitation of IT/Internet resources and in
developing learning materials in all media.

In addition, a Senior Lecturer would be expected to:
* disseminate their high quality scholarly work.

* generate new research activity.

* participate in developing postgraduate activity allied to existing Deaf Studies programmes.

Essential requirements of all candidates include:
* Experience in teaching/lecturing in a post-compulsory education
setting

* Qualifications to degree level or equivalent

* High order communication and presentation skills

* Effective ICT skills

* Experience in developing learning materials suitable for post-compulsory
education

* Supportiveness of the University's Mission Statement

* Ability to work well as a member of a committed and flexible Deaf and
non-Deaf team

A postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in Deaf Studies or a related
field, research experience and a record of publications are essential for
a Senior Lecturership.
