I am looking for information on the use of Zhu Yin Fu Hao versus Pin Yin
phonetic writing systems in bilingual Mandarin/English programs for
school children. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate
hearing from you. Has there been any research on the efficacy of the
systems?

The May 7 issue of The New York TImes reported on a reseach study by Dr.
David Snowden on predicting Alzheimer's disease with a group of nuns.

>>From what I understand he could predict onset of
Alzheimers by early language ability -- by the essay that was written at
the time of entry into the order.

Those with more complex language structures
(more adverbs, adjectives, more description) were at
less risk to get the disease. Those with simple concrete
language structures were more likely to get Alzheimers.

How do you think this fits into what goes into the development of
complex language. That is, the more varied and complex the
relationships are in a family and the more the individual has personal
contact with (and knowledge of) family through and across generations,
could that complex social system have a bearing on an individual's
abilities/ use of complex language structures.

I would be very interested in hearing your opinions about this
relationship.
