Call For Papers
Workshop on "Integrating foreign words"
at the 24th Annual Meeting of the German Linguistic Society (DGfS)
Feb 27 - Mar 01, 2002, in Mainz
Languages exhibit interesting differences in the way in which they
integrate foreign words into their own vocabulary. While some
languages integrate foreign words completely into their own
phonological, morphological and graphemic system, in other languages
foreign words form a subsystem or are not integrated at all. Sometimes
only words from one language/language family are integrated.
How languages integrate foreign words is interesting for linguistic
theory. The different options are reflected in different theoretical
assumptions: while some linguists claim that foreign words always form
a subsystem of their own, other linguists think that the study of how
foreign words are integrated helps to find out more about a language.
We would like to invite papers dealing with the integration of foreign
words from all areas of word grammar: phnology, inflection,
word-formation and graphemics. Relevant topics could be:
- integration of foreign words into the phonological system of a
language: Are foreign phonemes integrated or replaced? Are foreign
accent patterns integrated or replaced?
- inflection of foreign words; Do foreign words acquire native
inflection? Do they retain (parts of) the foreign inflection? Can
foreign inflection become productive?
- word formation: how do foreign words interact with native word
formation? Can foreign word formation patterns become productive?
- graphematic integration: how are foerign words integrated
graphematically?
There are two types of slots
(a) long talks: 40 minutes plus 15 minute discussion
(b) short talks: 20 minutes plus 10 minute discussion
Abstracts should not exceed 3 pages and can be sent electronically (as
postscript, pdf, or MS-Word file; please include any fonts that are not
standardly available) to

Workshop on Tone and Intonation in Europe
University of the Basque Country, Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), June 28-30
2001.
This workshop aims at gathering experts on issues of tone and
intonation of pitch accent languages and dialects spoken in Europe,
such as Swedish, Norwegian, Limburgian Dutch, Serbian/Croatian,
Slovene, Lithuanian, Bizkaian Basque, Gaelic dialects and creole
languages spoken in Europe, as well as non-pitch accent languages that
surround these languages. The main goal is to continue advancing on
our understanding of the main tonal and intonational properties of
languages with lexical tonal accent, but a comparison with some of the
so-called stress-accent languages that surround these pitch accent
languages (Spanish, Russian, Dutch, German, among others) can also
serve to better illustrate parametric differences among both types of
prosodic systems. Finally, there will also be a few presentations
focusing mainly on theoretical issues on tone and intonation.
The workshop leads into the research activities to be held by a
Network on Tone and Intonation in Europe funded by the European
Science Foundation, that some of the presenters in this workshop are
coordinators of. The workshop also hosts researchers from the
INTAS-funded project "The Typology of Intonation, Stress and Lexical
Tones in Slavic, Baltic and Germanic Languages (TYPIST)".
