We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Subject: Query about Spanish rhotic

-Does anybody know the IPA description and symbol for the fricative /r/
that appears in lieu of the standard Spanish trill in Chilean Spanish and
also in Quito (Ecuador) Spanish? Traditional accounts call it "erre
rehilada" and it is transcribed as as an r with the inverse of ^on top

Many thanks.

I'm scheduled to teach a course in Romance linguistics this fall.
It's aimed at foreign language teachers. Can someone recommend a
suitable text?

Thanks, Stuart
