Dear Linguists,

Through the Calls For Papers and Conference Announcements, LINGUIST
informs the linguistics community about regional, national, and
international conferences that take place across the globe. In the year
2000, LINGUIST posted over 1000 Calls and Confs, of which 764 were
Calls for Papers. By posting hundreds of conference announcements and
calls for papers per year, LINGUIST provides a very valuable and central
location for linguists to obtain conference information.

Most of us probably have formed our idea of the size of the conference
community from the number of announcements we used to encounter in our
local or national linguistics publications. The internet has changed
all this. And we would like to think that, in our academic discipline,
the Linguist List has played a leading part.

In the last five to seven years, conference organizers have told us
that their conference attendance has become more international, and
the general quality of the papers has improved because of the
increasing number of submissions. If so, perhaps these benifits have
accrued to linguistics in part because the discipline supports a
central international email list with over 13,500 subscribers. And
that is - you guessed it - the LINGUIST List.

But the LINGUIST List exists only so long as it is supported by the
discipline. Although Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan
University provide generous administrative support, we also require a
student staff which is funded primarily by subscriber donations.

This year we will need $40,000 to continue to fund our student editors
and continue to keep LINGUIST running. So far in our Year 2001 fund
drive, we have received $18,741 -- thanks to the generosity of the
persons and institutions whose names appear at the bottom of this page.
If you have not yet contributed, will you please do so now?

You can donate by credit card at
http://linguistlist.org/donation-form.html

or you can send a check made out to "The Linguist Editorial
Support Fund" to:

        The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
        c/o Helen Aristar-Dry
Dept. of English Language and Linguistic
        Eastern Michigan University
        Ypsilanti, MI 48197

Or you can simply hit "Reply" to this message, make a pledge by email,
and send your check later. Then we will be able to list you
immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal
(and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. Remember, if you
want a shirt, be sure to include your size, style preference, and a
snail-mail address with your check or email pledge.

As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.

In return for a donation of $25 or more, we would like to send you a
snazzy, dark blue LINGUIST T-shirt or sweatshirt. Go to

http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html

for styles and prices, as well as photos of our fashion-conscious
staff modeling this oh-so-elegant casual attire!

And don't forget to find the "Singing Pig" on the LINGUIST Home Page and
click for our sophisticated production, "The LINGUIST Fund Drive
Experience"!

Thank you in advance for your support of LINGUIST.

The LINGUIST Crew,

Anthony, Andrew, Helen, John, Terry, Simin, Karen, Lydia, Naomi,
James, Michael, Ljuba, Jody, Marie, Gayathri, and Heather
