The City University of Hong Kong is a young and dynamic comprehensive
university directly funded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region through the University Grants Committee (Hong
Kong).  It has about 16,000 students (11,000 full-time and 5,000
part-time) in three faculties (Business, Humanities & Social Sciences,
and Science & Engineering) and two schools (Law, and Creative Media).
Its strategic plan is an ambitious one, reflecting its aspirations to
become one of the leading universities in the Asia-Pacific region by
achieving excellence in teaching and research.

The Department of English and Communication under the Faculty of
Humanities & Social Sciences is fairly large and diverse, with a full
range of teaching and research that includes ESL, TESL, ESP, discourse
analysis, professional communication, mass communication and new
media.

The appointee must have a substantial record of research and
publications, coupled with demonstrable administrative experience and
interpersonal skills.  Cross-cultural perspective and experience in an
Asian/Chinese context are desirable.  In terms of area expertise, the
appointee will have to fit comfortably into one of the above-mentioned
specialisms, or else add a new dimension to the department, for
instance, in one or several of these areas:

- Language acquisition (esp. second language acquisition)
- English Literature / Literature in English / Comparative Literature
- Intercultural communication, with Chinese as one point of reference

The University also accepts nominations and reserves the right not to
fill the position.

Monthly Salary and Conditions of Service:

The successful candidate will be offered appointment to an academic rank
commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience,
with a salary of not less than HK$102,440 (approx. US$13,133) per month
for Professor (Chair) or HK$74,870 (approx. US$9,599) per month for
Professor (Scale A), comparable to Reader. [Exchange rate : US$1 =
HK$7.8 approximately].

The appointment will either be on superannuable terms with provision
for superannuation benefits, or on fixed-term contract with
contract-end gratuity.  Concurrently, the appointee will be offered
the headship appointment for an initial term of three years.  Generous
fringe benefits include annual leave, housing, medical and dental
schemes and passage allowance where applicable.
