Dear Linguists,

Thanks to the generosity of the people listed at the end of this
message, we have collected $27,906 of the $40,000 we need. That means
we need $12,094 more in order to support the students who will edit
LINGUIST in the coming year.

Some of you have noticed that our student editors have been writing
some of the fund drive letters. This year's crew also planned the
fund drive from its inception: they ordered the T-shirts, took the
promotional pictures, put up the fund drive web page, and produced the
Fund Drive Anthem with the slide show which is available by clicking on
the piggy-bank emblem on the LINGUIST homepage. They have also been
spending 4 hours a day processing donations--in addition to performing
their regular LINGUIST duties.

We have always been extremely lucky in the caliber of students we
have been able to enlist as LINGUIST editors. And they, of course,
have been lucky to have the support of you, our LINGUIST subscribers.

Since 1994, when the LINGUIST fellowhips were inaugurated, LINGUIST
subscribers have financed the educations of 19 outstanding graduate
students. We thought that you might be interested to learn what they
are doing now. Your donations funded:

3 student editors at Texas A&M:

	One has finished his Ph.D. and is now an Assistant Professor;
another is currently working on her dissertation (having taken some
time off for motherhood), and one has finished an M.A. and has just
been accepted into several Ph.D. programs in linguistics.

10 student editors in the M.A. program in linguistics at Eastern Michigan U.:

5 are now in the leading Ph.D. programs in linguistics.

1 will enter a leading Ph.D. program in linguistics in Fall, 2001

2 hold positions in the computer industry. One is using
his linguistics experience to build a knowledge base; the other is
        an Internet security consultant.

1 has just finished one M.A. and is about to finish another

1 (the one who designed our website, stationery, and T-shirts) is
now a graphics designer for a large newspaper

1 student editor at Wayne State U (where LINGUIST has been hosted for only
3 years, as compared to 10 years at Eastern Michigan U):

1 is finishing a B.A. in linguistics this year and going on to an M.A.

5 student programmers at Eastern Michigan U.:

4 completed their Masters degrees in computer science and
now hold jobs in software design.

1 is finishing an M.A. in CS this year

As you see, your donations have contributed not just to The LINGUIST
List but also but to the future of linguistics. Most of the 19
LINGUIST editors you have supported have gone on to pursue careers in
the discipline. Several others have drifted toward computer-related
employment, and their LINGUIST List experiences have nurtured this
interest as well as helped them to secure the jobs they wanted.

Those of you who have contributed to LINGUIST over the past 7 years
can feel proud that you have helped these students pursue their
educational and career goals. Please help us support the outstanding
students who are now providing you with the services you have come to
expect from LINGUIST. If you have not yet donated to the Linguist
Fund Drive, please do so now.

You can donate by credit card at
http://linguistlist.org/donation-form.html

or you can send a check made out to "The Linguist Editorial
Support Fund" to:

        The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
        c/o Helen Aristar-Dry
Dept. of English Language and Linguistic
        Eastern Michigan University
        Ypsilanti, MI 48197

Or you can simply hit "Reply" to this message, make a pledge by email,
and send your check later. Then we will be able to list you
immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal
(and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. Remember, if you
want a shirt, be sure to include your size, style preference, and a
snail-mail address with your check or email pledge.

As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.

In return for a donation of $25 or more, we would like to send you a
snazzy, dark blue LINGUIST T-shirt or sweatshirt. Go to

http://linguistlist.org/funddrive.html

for styles and prices, as well as photos of our fashion-conscious
staff modeling this oh-so-elegant casual attire!

And don't forget to find the "Singing Pig" on the LINGUIST Home Page
and click for our sophisticated production, "The LINGUIST Fund Drive
Experience"!

With sincere thanks for your continued support,

The LINGUIST Crew,

Anthony, Andrew, Helen, John, Terry, Simin, Karen, Lydia, Naomi,
James, Michael, Ljuba, Jody, Marie, Gayathri, and Heather
