As in other countries, the role of lecturers at Austrian universities is
charcterised by the fact that while especially language departments rely
heavily on them for teaching, their position is rather insecure since they
have only semester contracts. It is probably no coincidence that the
percentage of women there can go up to over 80%. Would be interesting to
look at pay schemes. A thought-provoking article on the "feminisation of
teaching" is Kenway, Jane and Langmead, Diana (2000): "Fast capitalism,
fast feminism and some fast food for thought", in: Ali, Suki et al. Global
Feminist Politics. London: Routledge, 154-175.
