The book analyzes and evaluates what major linguistic models say on
the interaction of lexicon and syntax in language performance. To
check the plausibility of the assumptions, they are compared with what
psycholinguists have found out. Moreover, reformulations, situations
of speech need, the use of 'lexical chunks' are analysed for what they
can contribute to the discussion, and for one of the main issues
experimental evidence is also produced.

Contents:

Introduction:
The endeavor

Grounding and definitions:
At the core of the language (Lexicon - Syntax)

Theories of language processing:
The lexicon-syntax interface in performance models, Models of language
production (An overall survey - Selected issues: Where lexicon and
syntax meet), Models of language comprehension (An overall survey -
Syntax and lexicon revisited)

Linguistic models under scrutiny:
The lexicon-syntax interface in competence models (Linguistic models and
the concept of naturalness - General assumptions as to the interrelation
between lexicon and syntax), Functional approaches (Dik's model -
Halliday's model - The methodological turn from Halliday to Sinclair),
Generative approaches (The Government-and-Binding model - The model of
Lexical Functional Grammar - The model of Lexical-Generative Grammar -
The model of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar), Cognitive linguistic
approaches (Deane's explorations in cognitive syntax - Goldberg's
Construction Grammar - Langacker's Cognitive Grammar)

Performance data:
Securing and interpreting the evidence, Reformulations/self-repairs,
Overlaps, Lexical co-occurrences

In the psycholinguist's laboratory:
An experimental test, The experiment (Method and procedure - Results -
Discussion)

The finale:
Launching the project, Bringing in the harvest (The lexicon-syntax
interface as reflected in performance models - The lexicon-syntax
interface as reflected in competence models - The lexicon-syntax
interface as reflected by performance data - The lexicon-syntax
interface as reflected by experimentally elicited data), Evaluating the
results - a psychologically plausible linguistic model
