Second Call for Papers
Theme: Focus on the Learner
Date: Oct. 8-10 (Beijing portion) and Oct. 11-14 (Guilin portion)

The Research Institute for Foreign Languages and the Dept. of Foreign
Languages of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, work
in collaboration with the College of International Culture and
Education of Guangxi Normal University and the Department of Modern
Languages and the Department of English of the University of Northern
Iowa are pleased to announce their 5th International Symposium on
Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching. The symposium will be held
from Oct. 8th to 9th (Beijing portion) and from Oct. 11th to 14th
(Guilin portion). Participants may choose to take part in either one
or both parts of the symposium.

Theme
Focus on the Learner

Objectives

We hope to network and bring together researchers and teachers to
discuss issues facing them in the 21st century. We also hope to
provide a forum where the participants can share their ideas and
experience in theoretical exploration or teaching practice. Particular
attention is paid to the learner, whose role and development should be
taken into full account in any language teaching program.

Sub-themes

The symposium will focus on a number of sub-themes including but not
limited to the following:

Learner characteristics, motivation and attitudes
Language learning issues for students
Linguistic theory and language teaching or learning
Approaches, methods and strategies in TEFL
Language and culture
Use of multi-media in teaching and learning
Testing
Writing and development of teaching materials
Curriculum development
Teaching development and training

Working language
English

Call for papers

The Organizing Committee is now inviting submission of abstracts for
papers. Abstracts should be a single page, with an additional page for
data or references if necessary. They are preferably not more than 500
words. Abstracts should include contact information (name,
affiliation, mail address, e-mail address, telephone number) in the
body of the mail. They may be submitted either electronically or by
mail. If submitted electronically, the abstract should either be
pasted into the e-mail or should be an attachment. E-mail submissions
should be sent to Mr. Jiang Quanhong fldbuaa at public.fhnet.cn.net. The
mail address is Mr. Jiang Quanhong, Dept. of Foreign Languages,
Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing 100083,
China.

Abstracts should be received by June 30, 2001. Notification of
acceptance will be made by July 31, 2001.

Symposium Venue

The symposium will be held in Beijing University of Aeronautics and
Astronautics in Beijing and Guangxi Normal University in Guilin, which
is considered by many to be China's best scenic spot for its unique
karst terrain.

Dates and activities
(Oct. 5   Arrival in Beijing for pre-conference activities)
Oct. 6-7 Visits to the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs, the Forbidden City,
the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace)
Oct. 7       Arrival & registration for the symposium
Oct. 8-9    Meeting in Beijing (one night for Beijing Opera)
Oct. 10 Departure for Guilin (Afternoon maybe shopping time if arrival
is around noon)
Oct. 11-12 Meeting in Guilin (one night for performance by the 13
ethnic minorities of the region)
Oct. 13-14 Sightseeing in Guilin (incl. boat trip along Li River to
Yangshuo, and sightseeing around Guilin)
Oct. 15     Departure from Guilin

Registration

Participants must register for the symposium on Oct. 7 for the Beijing
portion or Oct. 10th for the Guilin portion. Those who want to take
part in the pre-conference activities must register on Oct. 5. The
fees for the participants are as follows:

    For the Beijing portion alone: US$400 (excluding the pre-conference
    activities) or $550 (including the pre-conference activities).

    For the Guilin portion alone: US$600.
    For both the Beijing and Guilin (incl. the flight from Beijing to Guilin):
    US$1150.
    For both the Beijing and Guilin (incl. pre-conference activities and the
    flight from  Beijing to Guilin):  US$1300.
    These are for double-room in 3-star hotels or above, for single room add
    $20/day.

The fees for spouse/child are as follows:
The Beijing portion alone: US$200(excluding the preconference
activities) or $300 (including the preconference activities).
The Guilin portion alone:US$400.
Both the Beijing and Guilin (incl. the flight from Beijing to Guilin): US$750.
Both the Beijing and Guilin (incl. pre-conference activities and the flight
from Beijing to Guilin):  US$850.

Abstracts Due June 1

The 30th annual meeting of
The Linguistic Association of the Southwest (LASSO)
will be held 28-30 September 2001
in Albuquerque, New Mexico, hosted by the
University of New Mexico.

Conference theme:  Language Use and Structure.

Plenary addresses by John Baugh of Stanford University
and Pamela Munro of UCLA.

Presidential address by Harmon Boertien of
the University of Houston.

Abstracts for papers in any area of linguistics are welcome,
though proposals on the theme "Language Use and Structure"
are particularly encouraged.

Deadline for abstracts:  June 1, 2001.
