Subject: Language Learning AI project

Dear Linguists,
I hope I might take a moment of your time and introduce myself... Hello, my
name is James Waterhouse and I am a student completing a BSc (major in
Computer Science and minor in Linguistics) at McGill University in Montreal,
Quebec, Canada. The reason I am writing to this list is with respect to a
project I am interested in starting, namely the building of a language
learning artificial intelligence (AI). I know that building an AI is no easy
task but I believe approaching it through language will make it manageable.
The project will entail building the universal grammar (UG) and all the
tools necessary to allow the AI to build on this (in other words learn one
or more languages). I believe such an AI could be useful in a number of
ways, two which come to mind being the testing of theories of UG and
language translation. On the technical level, I will be programming this AI
on the free OS Linux in C/C++ with the help of other volunteers. This letter
is an appeal to anyone interested in this project for help with the
programming, for ideas, or for knowledge. I can be reached at
james.waterhouse at videotron.ca. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
James Waterhouse

Subject: Corpus for anaphora resolution

Dear list members,

I am planing to write a thesis on anaphora resolution by machine learning
methodes. Since I need training data I am looking for English or German corpora
with anaphoras resolved. If you have any suggestions where to look for such
corpa, please let me know.

Also, I would be deeply grateful to learn whether the MUC 6 corpus provides
resolved anaphoras.

Appreciating any help,

Jahn-T. Saito.
