The biennial International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Modeling and
Using Context (CONTEXT) provides a forum for high-quality discussions about
context among researchers in artficial intelligence, cognitive science,
computer science, linguistics, organizational science, philosophy, and
psychology. Context is important in a wide range of fields and applications,
and in a variety of ways. The importance of studying context as a subject
matter in its own right, as well as in how it relates to other areas, is widely
acknowledged. This is evidenced by numerous recent workshops, symposia,
seminars, and conferences on the subject (see the Context Web site). The
CONTEXT series of conferences has a unique place among these these due to its
strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research. The first conference in this
series (CONTEXT'97) was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1997, and the second
(CONTEXT' 99) was held in Trento in 1999 (see
http://www.cs.unitn.it/CONTEXT-99 for details).
TOPICS OF INTEREST
The following topics are indicative of the scope of the conference:
case-based reasoning, cognitive modeling, commonsense reasoning,
active databases, decision support systems, distributed information
systems, formal theories of context, heterogeneous information
integration, human-computer interaction, information management,
intelligent internet systems, intelligent tutoring systems, knowledge
engineering, knowledge management, knowledge representation, machine
learning, multi-agent systems, natural language processing, natural
language semantics, organizational contexts, philosophical
foundations, and pragmatics.

REGISTRATION
Registration for the conference is via the Web. The registration form can be
accessed by visiting the conference Web site:

and selecting the ``Register'' menu item. Two types of registration exist,
depending on whether one will be staying in the associated accommodations
(residential attendees) or not (local attendees). The residential registration
fees are as follows:

Accommodations may be reserved via the on-line registration form as
well (from £32-55 per night). Those with accommodations and who pay
the residential registration fee will be provided admission to the
conference, the opening reception, and the poster buffet, and will
receive a copy of the proceedings. Admission to the 5-course dinner on
June 29th is available to the residential attendees for an additional
£15.
Local registration is £20 per day attending, and includes admission
to that day's conference activities and lunch. Conference proceedings
will be available for an additional nominal charge. Admission to the

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS
The Eleventh International Conference on Methods in Dialectology
(Methods XI) will be held from 5 to 9 August 2002, at the University
of Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland. This conference, which has
previously met triennially at various places in Canada and the United
Kingdom, is now for the first time arranged in northern Europe. From
its initial focus on problems of methodology, the conference series
has gradually expanded its scope to cover the whole range of issues
relating to regional, social and also historical variation in any
language, group of languages or linguistic area.
Conference venue
The conference will be held on the main campus of the University of
Joensuu. One of the newest universities in Finland, it celebrated its
thirtieth anniversary in 1999. The University has six faculties and a
student population of slightly over 6,000. It is situated in Joensuu,
which is the administrative centre of North Karelia, the easternmost
province of Finland. This area can be described as a meeting point
between two different cultural traditions, one looking to the
Protestant west, the other drawing on the East Orthodox religious
tradition. The latter retains a strong presence in North Karelia and
especially in those areas of historical Karelia which are now on the
Russian side of the border. Indeed, it is the closeness of the border,
with its numerous changes over the centuries, which adds special
flavour to the cultural atmosphere and everyday life of North
Karelia. While the border was virtually closed in the years before the
collapse of the Soviet Union, access to Russian Karelia is now
relatively easy. Various kinds of cross-border traffic connections and
trade links are being established with great vigour.
Travel information
Joensuu can be easily reached by air via Helsinki (flight-time about 1
hour). There are several trains per day from Helsinki, Tampere and
Turku. For those travelling by car or coach, the roads from Helsinki
or the other major ports offer a beautiful journey through some of the
best parts of the Finnish Lakelands.
Registration and accommodation
Detailed information about registration, accommodation and conference
tours will be posted on our website as soon as it becomes
available. This information will also be included in the Second
Circular, which will be sent out in September 2001 to all those on our
e-mail list.
Abstracts and papers
Abstracts for papers are invited on any topic in regional, social or
historical language variation. The presentations will last for 20
minutes, followed by a 10-minute discussion period. Abstracts should
be 300-400 words long, excluding bibliographies, and they should be
submitted by e-mail as RTF (or ASCII text) files to the following
address:

The conference language is English, but papers read in French and German
are also welcome. The deadline for submission is 30 November, 2001. The
authors will be notified of acceptance in January 2002.
Given the nature of North Karelia as a historical border area between
two states and two different linguistic and cultural traditions, a
special theme for Methods XI will be "Dialects across borders". Papers
and workshops or special sessions are particularly welcome on topics
dealing with the effects of political, ethnic, cultural or other kinds
of borders on all aspects of dialect or language variation. A number
of distinguished scholars are presently being invited as keynote
speakers. Suggestions for special sessions, workshops, demonstrations
or poster sessions on other topics are also welcome. Further
information will be announced on the conference website, which is
updated regularly.
