The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

TOSHIBA RESEARCH EUROPE LIMITED: CAMBRIDGE RESEARCH LABORATORY

		      Speech Research Positions

Toshiba Research Europe Ltd (TREL) is a subsidiary of the Toshiba
Corporation with laboratories in Cambridge and Bristol. The Cambridge
Research Laboratory (CRL) is extending its research activities to
include speech recognition and synthesis, and it is therefore
establishing a new Speech Research Group in Cambridge.

This new group will be fully operational by Spring 2002. Working in
close co-operation with Toshiba Research & Development Centre, it will
create innovative algorithms for speech synthesis and recognition with
an emphasis on future communications technologies. It is also
intended that the new Speech Group will develop strong collaborative
links with the University of Cambridge, with Kawasaki, Japan, and with
other European institutions.

Toshiba is now seeking to recruit a Technical Leader for the new
Speech Research Group and a team of top quality Research Staff able to
contribute directly to making progress in speech processing
technologies for European languages. Potential candidates should have
a good honours degree in Engineering or Computer Science and ideally,
a PhD or Masters in an area related to speech processing. Practical
experience in speech processing, a good knowledge of C/C++ and
European language skills would all be an advantage. The successful
candidates will be practically-minded, innovative, and will be able to
interact effectively within a group environment.

An attractive salary and benefit package will be offered.
