The Society for Caribbean Linguistics announces its
14th Biennial Conference (SCL 2002)
at the University of the West Indies
St. Augustine
Trinidad and Tobago
14-17 August 2002
Theme: Caribbean Linguistics: Theory and Application
The Society for Caribbean Linguistics invites papers for the 14th Biennial
Conference to be held at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine
Campus, from Wednesday 14th to Saturday 17th August, 2001. The conference is
being hosted by the Department of Liberal Arts, the UWI, St. Augustine.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Papers on any subject area relevant to Caribbean Linguistics, including
contributions on sub-themes such as Phonology, Suprasegmental systems,
the Lexicon, Applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics will be
considered. Contributions are specially invited for presentation at the
special colloquia dealing with language learning and teaching in the
Caribbean.
The following format is required for all abstracts being proposed. At
the top of the page, type:
Name
Mailing address
E-mail address
Fax and telephone numbers.
Immediately below, type the title of the paper, and below this the text of the
abstract, using single line spacing. Abstracts should be no longer than one
page and may be sent by regular or electronic mail as indicated.
Send three copies by regular mail to:

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is January 2, 2002.
Acceptance letters will be mailed by January 25, 2002.
The deadline for the receipt of FULL TEXT VERSIONS of papers to be presented is
30th April, 2002. The full text versions should take the form of (i) a letter
quality hard copy, single spaced, printed on one side of the paper only, (ii) a
computer diskette version in Microsoft Word 95 or any more recent version.
Because time is required to prepare a bound volume of papers for participants,
it will not be possible to accommodate late submissions.
Some of the events planned include:
* Keynote address on indigenous languages in the Caribbean by Professor Mervyn
Alleyne
* Three special colloquia on the following:
- Language Advising
- Teaching English in Standard/Creole-speaking societies
- Linguistics and the Education system
* Sightseeing tours
* Local entertainment
Details re: accommodation options, travel, etc., will be provided in a later
posting.

CALL FOR PAPERS
AI'2002, the Fifteenth Canadian Conference on Artificial Intelligence, is
a forum that showcases current research in artificial intelligence from
researchers around the world. The conference features research paper
presentations and invited speakers. AI'2002, the (now annual) meeting of
the Canadian Artificial Intelligence community, will be held in
conjunction with GI'2002 (Graphics Interface) and VI'2002 (Vision
Interface).
Knowledge Representation Data Mining
Automated Reasoning Robotics
Search Agents and Multi-Agent Systems
Natural Language User Modeling
Constraint Satisfaction AI and E-Commerce
Planning AI and Information Processing
Machine Learning AI and Web Applications
Neural Networks AI and Education
Reasoning under Uncertainty AI in Games
Papers outside these specified areas are also welcome. The only
requirements are that the paper describe current work in artificial
intelligence, either theoretical or applied, that has not been published
elsewhere. Papers may be up to 15 pages in length in Springer LNCS style
(See http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html - Latex style is
strongly encouraged).
Papers will be judged according to their originality, technical merit and
overall presentation style. Authors must first submit by November 30, 2001
a raw text message to ai02 at math.uwaterloo.ca, with subject header "AI2002
Abstract", indicating the paper's title, authors, authors' addresses,
abstract and topic areas, together with the e-mail address of the contact
author. Submission of papers is via email of a (compressed) postscript
file to ai02 at math.uwaterloo.ca by December 3, 2001, with the subject
header "AI2002 Submission" followed by the contact author's name and an
optional "first", "second" etc. if this author will submit several
papers. Please note that paper submissions must continue to include the
title, authors, addresses and abstract of the paper. Authors will be
notified of acceptance on Feb 18, 2002. Final versions of accepted papers
must be received by March 18, 2002. General inquiries should be directed
