The Department of East Asian Studies is seeking to fill a vacancy in
Japanese language and a cross-disciplinary area of study between
language and one or more of the following: gender studies, social and
cultural studies, or a related field.  This is a tenure track position
at the level of an Assistant Professor to be filled by July 1, 2002.
Salary for entrance-level Assistant Professor is $45,378.

The candidate will have a proven record of excellence in teaching and
research in modern Japanese language and in the related area, native
or near-native fluency in Japanese and English, and Ph.D. in hand by
the time of appointment. The normal teaching load consists of five
semester courses including language courses on all levels,
particularly second and third year.

The candidate is expected to make an active contribution to the
undergraduate and graduate programs in Japanese.
