LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS. Tenure Track, Assistant Professor

Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or Applied
Linguistics, awarded prior to August 22, 2002, with a focus in
language development and linguistic theory. Strong background in areas
related to developmental literacy is required, as is a demonstrably
strong commitment to working with students preparing to teach in
K-12. Evidence of teaching effectiveness required. Candidate should
have potential for successful research, publication, and other
scholarly/professional/creative activities. Publication in field of
specialization is desirable.  Candidate should expect to teach
Introduction to Modern Grammar, Language Differences and Language
Change, as well as graduate and undergraduate courses in his or her
specialization.

For all of its positions, the Department of English seeks candidates
with competence in a secondary area of expertise.  For this position
in particular, desirable areas of competence are: SLA/TESL,
morphology, phonology, semantics, syntax, general pragmatics or
discourse studies, conversational analysis, language policy,
pidgin/creole studies; or rhetoric/composition.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be a member of the
Department of English but will also teach in the Linguistics/TESL
Program which is housed in the College of Humanities. The Linguistics
Program offers a Masters Degree, with general and TESL tracks, and a
major in linguistics at the baccalaureate level. Both the Department
of English and the Linguistics/TESL Program offer linguistics courses
on the undergraduate and graduate levels, some of which are required
in teaching credential programs. All faculty are expected to serve on
departmental and/or university committees and to advise students. The
standard teaching load for faculty at Northridge is 12 units per
semester, although reassigned time may be available for research
and/or curriculum development. The University especially seeks
individuals who will contribute to both their chosen disciplines and
the University's commitments to teacher preparation and general
education.
