Call for Proposals
Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Society for Text and Discourse
Thursday through Sunday, June 27 - 30, 2002
Palmer House Hilton Hotel, Chicago, IL
(Co-sponsor: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Inc.)
The Society for Text and Discourse will hold its Twelfth Annual Meeting at
the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago, IL, from Thursday through Sunday, June
27 - 30. The Society for Text and Discourse is an international society of
researchers who investigate all aspects of discourse processing and text
analysis. (See our web site: http://www.psyc.memphis.edu/ST&D/ST&D.htm). The
purpose of the Society is to consolidate research in discourse processing
and to enhance communication among researchers in different disciplines.
Therefore, we invite scholars from various disciplines (e.g., psychology,
linguistics, artificial intelligence, education, sociology, anthropology,
communications, and philosophy) to attend and participate in the Twelfth
Annual Meeting of the Society for Text and Discourse.
This year we are trying something new by holding a coordinated meeting with
the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading. By coordinated we mean that
the two organizations are jointly planning several special, invited sessions
that are designed for attendees at both conferences. In addition, poster
sessions will be conducted in the same room at the same time. Other than
these jointly planned sessions, the remainder of the program will have four
parallel sessions in each time slot, two devoted to ST&D presentations and
two devoted to SSSR presentations. Presentations for the parallel sessions
are to be submitted to the appropriate society and will be acted on in
accord with each Society's procedures.
The program committees of the two organizations are in the process of
planning the invited sessions to be held jointly with the SSSR. Current
topics we are considering are:
. Beginning Reading: Development of Coding and Comprehension Skills
. Comprehension in the Disciplines (i.e., History, Science, Literature,
Math, etc.)
. Technologies for Enhancing Reading and Reading Assessment
. Reading/Writing Relationships in Early Reading and Subject Matter Literacy
. Relationships between Oral and Written Language
If you would like to contribute suggestions for other topics or speakers for
specific sessions please get in touch with Joe Magliano (jmagliano at niu.edu),
Susan Goldman (sgoldman at uic.edu) or Rosalind Horowitz (rhorowitz at utsa.edu)
as soon as possible.
The remainder of this call includes information on Submitting Proposals.
The Deadline for Proposal Submission is February 1, 2001.
We have negotiated excellent rates with the Palmer House Hilton Hotel: $130
per night single or double occupancy. These rates are equivalent to those at
the Santa Barbara meeting in 2001. We have asked for a block of 200 rooms to
be reserved for participants in the coordinated meeting. If we fill that
number of rooms, there will be no extra room rental charges for the meeting
rooms. So we are encouraging you to stay at the Palmer House and to book
early to relieve anxiety on the part of the organizers! By the end of
November we will post details regarding Hotel and Lodging, Transportation,
Registration, and Membership in the Society.
Information on Submitting Proposals
1. Submitting Proposals: How to submit a proposal for presentation at the
Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Society for Text and Discourse.
2. Submitting proposals for student awards: How to submit an entry for the
OUTSTANDING STUDENT PAPER and the JASON ALBRECHT AWARDS.

1. How to Submit a Proposal for the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Society
for Text and Discourse
Presentations at the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the Society for Text and
Discourse can be in the form of POSTERS or SPOKEN PAPERS. The deadline for
submitting proposals for both presentation formats is February 1, 2002. Note
that this is a receipt deadline (proposals must be received on or before
that date). Proposals will be reviewed by the program committee, and authors
will be notified regarding acceptance by the end of March, 2002. Please note
that all presentations must be based on research that is completed at the
time that the proposal is submitted.
Prepare POSTER and PAPER submissions according to the format provided below.
Submit proposals via EMAIL to jmagliano at niu.edu. Place the proposal in the
body of the email, using as subject header for the email the last name of
the first author and the title of the proposal (e.g. Goldman, The benefits
of becoming a member of the Society for Text and Discourse). In addition,
you may attach a file (saved as an RTF file); name the file by last name of
the first author. (If you are submitting multiple proposals use the last
name and a number, e.g., Goldman1, Goldman2). Each proposal must be sent in
a separate email message.
Format for Submitting POSTER and PAPER proposals. NOTE: If you wish to
submit a symposium or panel proposal, please contact Joe Magliano prior to
preparing the submission.

and will need to convert any non-electronic submissions. Confirmation of
receipt of submissions will be sent within a week of receiving them.
2. How to Submit Proposals for the OUTSTANDING STUDENT PAPER or the JASON
ALBRECHT OUTSTANDING YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDS.
The Outstanding Student Paper Award is presented annually to the best spoken
paper submitted and presented by a graduate student.
Eligibility: Proposals for the Outstanding Student paper award must reflect
work that is predominantly that of the student, who should also be
appropriately the first author. In the case of multi-author papers, authors
other than the student nominee must indicate that the work is primarily that
of the student.
The Jason Albrecht Outstanding Young Scientist Award is presented annually
to the best spoken paper based on a doctoral dissertation. This award honors
the memory of Jason Albrecht, a promising young text and discourse
researcher who passed away in 1996.
Eligibility: Proposals for the Albrecht award must reflect work that is
based on the nominee's dissertation. In the case of multi-author papers, the
other authors must indicate that the work is based on the nominee's doctoral
dissertation.
Recipients of each award receive a commemorative certificate and a $150
prize.
Proposals for these two awards are submitted twice: Once to the regular
program review process and separately to the Awards Review Committee.
Deadline for submission is December 15, 2000 for both. The proposals undergo
two reviews - one by the regular program committee, with author
identification; and a second by the Awards Review Committee without author
identification. Only proposals that are accepted for inclusion on the
program by the regular review committee are eligible for Awards.
Follow the procedures given in section 1 for submission to the regular
program review. The format for submission to the Awards Review Committee is
the same as that for submission to the regular program review with two
exceptions.
1. Under item B: Nominees' names should be in all caps or underlined; they
should be the first authors of the submitted proposals. Other authors
should check the appropriate statement:

author. (Outstanding Student Paper Award)
____ I certify that the research is based on the doctoral dissertation of
the first author. (Albrecht award)
2. Under item E: Do NOT include the Author(s)' names and affiliations.
Proposals being submitted to the Awards Review Committee should also be sent
via EMAIL to jmagliano at niu.edu following the same instructions provided for
submission to the regular program review, except for one change in the
subject header of the email. The subject heading for entries for the
Outstanding Student Paper Award should contain the acronym OSPA followed by
the last name of the student submitting the proposal (e.g., OSPA,
Sundermeier). The subject heading for entries for the Jason Albrecht
Outstanding Young Scientist Award should contain the acronym JAOYSA followed
by the last name of the student submitting the proposal (e.g., JAOYSA,
Linderholm).
Evaluation of entries for these two awards will be without author
identification. Information in Items A and D will be examined after review
and ratings of the proposals.
Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed. If for some reason you cannot
