 ==========================================================================
The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Canada Research Chair in Speech and Cognitive Sciences. The Department
of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia invites
applications for a Canada Research Chair in Speech and Cognitive
Sciences at the rank of Full Professor, to begin as early as July 1,
2002.

UBC research in speech-related areas spans the faculties of Arts,
Applied Science, Medicine, Science and Dentistry (including the units
of Linguistics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Psychology,
Audiology & Speech Sciences, Computer Science, and the Institute of
Hearing Accessibility Research, the Brain Research Centre, and the
Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive
Systems). Interdisciplinary collaborations integrating these areas
have been at the focal point of major funding organisations and also
feed directly into high-priority teaching areas such as the new
Cognitive Systems program at UBC. As part of these initiatives, we are
seeking a world-class senior researcher who has attained international
recognition as a leader in the investigation and modeling of speech
production and/or perception. Possible areas of expertise include
modelling human speech cognition, human-computer interface,
multi-modal (audio/visual) integration in speech processing, and
speech production and perception.

This individual will be based in the Department of Linguistics (with
additional affiliations in one or more of the above-listed units).
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics, and should also
demonstrate strong ties to one or more of the above disciplines. In
addition to a strong commitment to research, this position will
involve teaching courses in linguistics at the graduate and
undergraduate levels. This position is subject to final budgetary
approval.

Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a description of your
current research plans, representative samples of published or
unpublished work, teaching evaluations (if available) and any
additional supporting documents to the address below before January 1,
2002. In addition, applicants should arrange for at least three
letters of recommendation to be sent under separate cover to:
