CALL FOR PAPERS -- SALSA 2002

The SYMPOSIUM ABOUT LANGUAGE AND SOCIETY--AUSTIN is pleased to
announce its 10th annual meeting to be held APRIL 12-14, 2002, at the
University of Texas at Austin.  We encourage the submission of
abstracts on research that addresses the relationship of language to
culture and society.  Desired frameworks include but are not limited
to:

LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY
SOCIOLINGUISTICS
ETHNOGRAPHY OF COMMUNICATION
LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY
SPEECH PLAY, VERBAL ART, AND POETICS
LANGUAGE AND MEDIA
POLITICAL ECONOMY OF LANGUAGE
LANGUAGE AND SOCIAL INTERACTION
DISCOURSE ANALYSIS
LANGUAGE VITALITY

Selected papers delivered at the conference will be published as a
special edition of the Texas Linguistic Forum.  Speakers will be
allowed 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.
Papers will be selected based on the evaluation of an anonymous
written abstract, which may not exceed 400 words.  This year, we will
accept only electronic submissions.

Submissions:  Please email your abstract to

Subject:  SALSA 10 Abstract.  Please include in the
following order:
  1. title of the paper
  2. author's name
  3. author's affiliation
  4. address, phone number, and email address at which the
author wishes to be notified
  5. a 400-word abstract*
  6. a short 100-word abstract* for publication in the
conference program
*If the abstracts are an attachment to your email, please
copy the text in the body of the message as well.

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is JANUARY 23, 2002.  Late
submissions will not be accepted, and we cannot accept papers which
are to be published elsewhere.  Notification of acceptance or
rejection will be sent in mid-February, 2002.  Registration fees will
be approximately $20 for students and $40 for non-students.  Completed
papers must be brought to the conference to be included in the
published proceedings.

First Call for Abstracts: FASL 11, The Amherst Meeting

Eleventh Annual Workshop on Formal Approaches to Slavic Linguistics

May 3-5, 2002, at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: January 22, 2002. Target decision date:
February 20.

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes
discussion) on topics dealing with formal aspects of any area of
theoretical Slavic linguistics (synchronic or diachronic), including syntax,
semantics, morphology, phonology, discourse analysis, and
psycholinguistics. Limit one individual abstract plus one joint abstract per
author.

Send 6 copies of a ONE-PAGE ANONYMOUS abstract, with one optional
additional page for examples, to the postal address below. No fax
submissions will be accepted.

Please attach ONE 3x5 card [or a separate sheet of paper] with:
 1) title of paper
 2) author's name(s)
 3) address and affiliation
 4) telephone and/or fax numbers
 5) e-mail address

(Authors are advised to re-check examples and glosses with speakers of
the languages involved.)

Word Perfect, PDF, .ps or .prn format. The organizers cannot be
responsible for problems arising from clashes of hardware or software;
try to 'embed fonts' in any files you send and/or avoid the use
of non-standard fonts. If in doubt, mail paper copy in addition or
instead. Our first choice is that you send your abstract in both paper
and electronic form, for ease of communicating with all referees.

Contiguous event: Immediately following the FASL 11 conference, there
will be a two-day workshop on the semantics and syntax of possessive
constructions (including but not limited to Slavic), May 5 (afternoon) - 7,
the proceedings of which will be published both in Moscow and Amherst.
Plans for that workshop are about to get under way. Expressions of
interest are welcome. Organizers: Barbara H. Partee
