            5th Australasian Natural Language Processing Workshop

PURPOSE

A one-day workshop on Natural Language Processing will be held in
conjunction with the Australian AI conference (AI'01) in Adelaide:
http://www.cs.adelaide.edu.au/AI2001/

The goals of the workshop are:

    * to bring together the growing NLP community in Australia and New
      Zealand;
    * to provide an opportunity for the broader artificial intelligence
      community to become aware of local NLP research;
    * to provide a forum for discussion of new research;
    * to foster interaction between academic and industrial research.

Our hope is to get as many Australasian NLPers together as possible to
encourage dialogue between those working on similar topics and between
areas with a - perhaps as yet untapped - potential to interact.

Subject to sponsorship confirmation, there will be an invited talk by
Graeme Ritchie (University of Edinburgh) with the topic: "Text
Generation with Surface Constraints".

The workshop proceedings will be printed with an ISBN number.

TOPIC

We invite the submission of papers on substantial, original, and
unpublished research on all aspects of natural language processing,
including, but not limited to:

    * speech understanding and generation;
    * phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and
      discourse;
    * interpreting and generating spoken and written language;
    * linguistic, mathematical, and psychological models of language;
    * language-oriented information extraction and retrieval;
    * corpus-based and statistical language modeling;
    * machine translation and translation aids;
    * natural language interfaces and dialogue systems;
    * message and narrative understanding systems;
    * computational lexicography.

We welcome submissions on any topic that is of interest to the NLP
community, but we particularly encourage submissions that broaden the
scope of our community through the consideration of practical NLP
applications.  We especially invite people from industry working on
NLP to send us their submissions and offer an opportunity to discuss
and demonstrate their latest applications in front of an informed
audience.

SUBMISSION FORMAT

The length of the submissions should not exceed 8 pages, printed
single-spaced in 12 point font. The first page should include:

    * paper title,
    * author name(s) and affiliation,
    * complete addresses including email address and fax number,
    * keywords,
    * abstract.

Only electronic submissions of PDF or PostScript files will be
accepted. If we cannot print your file by the submission date it will
be rejected without being reviewed. Therefore you are encouraged to
send an early version with the typographical complexity of your final
intended version so that we can check it is printable. Electronic
submissions should be sent to anlp-submit at ics.mq.edu.au.

IMPORTANT DATES

  Paper submission:             Friday 21st September 2001.
  Notification of acceptance:   Monday 8th October 2001.
  Camera-ready copy:            Monday 29th October 2001.
  Workshop:                     Tuesday 11th December 2001.

1st International Wordnet Conference

The Global Wordnet Association together with CIIL Mysore, IIT Bombay
and IIIT Hyderabad are very pleased to announce the first
International Conference on Wordnets. The conference will be held at
the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore (Karnataka State),
India (http://www.ciil.org/gwn).

Details about the Association and the full announcement for the conference
can be found on the GWA website (http://www.hum.uva.nl/~ewn/gwa.htm).

The conference will include tutorials on building wordnets,
demonstrations of wordnet databases and wordnet-based software,
wordnet project presentations and scientific papers on any issue
related to wordnets, including but not limited to:

A.	Linguistics and WordNet:
	a.	In depth analysis of Semantic Relations,
	b.	Theoretical definitions of word meaning,
	c.	Necessity and Completeness issues.
B.	Architecture of the WordNet:
	a.	Language independent and language dependent components
C.	Tools and Methods for Wordnet Development:
	a.	User and Data entry interface, organization,
	b.	Extending and enriching wordnets
D.	WordNet as a lexical resource and component of NLP and MT system:
	a.	Word sense disambiguation using wordnet,
	b.	Ontologies and WordNet,
	c.	The Lexicon and WordNet
E.	Applications of WordNet:
	a.	Information Extraction and Retrieval,
	b.	Document Structuring and Categorization,
	c.	Automatic Hyperlinking
	d.	Language Teaching,
        e.      Psycholinguistic Applications
F.	Standardization, distribution and availability of wordnets and wordnet
tools.

Presentations will fall into one of the following categories:

- long papers (30 mins) (9 pages)
- short papers (15 mins) (6 pages)
- project reports (10 mins) (4 pages)
- demonstrations (10 mins) (4 pages)

Submissions will have to state the preferred format. Acceptance may be
subject to changes in the format or length of the presentation.
(E.g., a long paper submission may be accepted as a short paper.)

Long papers should contain approximately 5,00 words (9 pages); short
papers should be approx. 3,000 words long (6 pages). Project reports
and transcripts of demos will be limited to approx. 2,000 words (4
pages of text). The papers should largely follow the ACL-style
sheets. Style sheets and examples can be downloaded from the
conference web site: http://www.ciil.org/gwn

Papers should be submitted in electronic form (Word). Author(s) should
register as a submitter and email their paper to:
secretary_gwn at ciil.stpmy.soft.net.

The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2001. Decisions regarding
acceptance will be announced to the authors in early November.

The host institution (CIIL) has stated their intent to publish the
Proceedings both in paper and CD format.
