The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign announces an Assistant Professor,
tenure-track, position with a specialty in Russian language to
supervise language instruction in the department. Candidates should be
able to contribute to teaching in the Second Language Acquisition and
Teacher Education (SLATE) program and to the teaching of Russian
literature and/or cultural studies. We seek a promising scholar with a
demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, and a well-defined
research program that complements existing departmental
strengths. Specialization in Second Language Acquisition or training
in Russian applied linguistics is preferred. Responsibilities include
supervision of undergraduate language instruction and teaching at the
graduate and undergraduate levels and in courses leading to the
interdisciplinary doctoral certificate in Second Language
Acquisition. Native or near-native proficiency in Russian and
professional-level proficiency in English are required. Knowledge of a
second Slavic language is strongly preferred. Applicants should hold
the Ph.D. by the date of appointment.  Salary commensurate with
qualifications and experience (entry level salary with Ph.D completed
is $47,000).  Starting date: August 21, 2002.

recommendation, sample publications and/or dissertation chapters, and
evidence of excellence in teaching must be received by November 30,
2001.
