The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

A Research Initiative: FASiL is being undertaken. FASiL will produce a
true natural language and mixed-initiative Virtual Personal Assistant.
FASiL will provide Vox with version 5 and 6 of its VPA. The VPA will
embody conversational interaction, incorporating multi-modal input and
output in a mobile device with access to agenda, email and contacts and
the potential for rapid integration of other Internet content. The
system will be 3G mobile ready. The development of current and new
research is required to generate adequate language recognition models
for non-trivial domains and the fusion of multi-modal information with
updated databases (to feed a mobile 3G service). The project deploys
new research in natural language understanding, specifically: (1)
Sophisticated dialogue management that adapts to the experience and
style of the user; and (2) An advanced language model capable of
integrating and unifying several models of linguistic knowledge.

THE JOB:

Senior or Staff Scientist in Language Modelling

Work on a large international project hosted at Vox Generation Ltd. Vox
is building a scientific team of 18 individuals to focus on full
mixed-initiative conversational dialogue systems. In this role, you
will research and innovate new techniques in Unified Hierarchical
Language Modelling for training conversational dialogue systems. This
project is partnered with SpeechWorks International on the development
of new language modelling techniques.

We seek an individual with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Physical
Sciences or Engineering/Mathematics. Quantitative Computational
Linguists with experience in statistical language modelling or
statistical language processing sought. Requirements include: excellent
programming skills in Perl. Preferable skills in Java or C++.
Analytical background in mathematics or hard sciences preferred at
Bachelor's level. Strong grades on A levels.
