Linguist is the single most useful resource available to our field
today. That, and the fact that it depends upon individual donations to
keep running is reason enough to donate.

But one of the main reasons I like to donate to Linguist is that I
know where my money is going. Of course like everyone else I give to
other charitable organizations, but whenever I do that, I always worry
about how much of my money is really making it to the people who need
it. With Linguist I never have that worry: I know that 100% of my
donation is going to help pay for the day-to-day operations of
something that the field has come to depend upon.

Thanks to Richard Sproat for writing this letter for us. He brings up
an important point; you can be sure your entire donation goes to us
and that it is spent wisely. The largest of our daily running costs
is wages for our student editors. We want to be able to support our
editors through the spring and summer when classes are not scheduled.
By doing so, we will be able to continue improvements to the website
and keep up our level of service throughout the year.

Moderators, on the other hand, do not take a salary from LINGUIST
List. Your money goes to the students.

If 100% of your donation going to LINGUIST is not enough for you, how
about if it was 200%? This might sound mathematically difficult, but
as we are a non-profit organization, we qualify for corporate
donation-matching from the company you work for.

A number of our contributors have taken advantage of such schemes, and
thanks to everyone listed below, we have collected $33,492. However,
to keep the same number of students working for us next year and
through the summer, we need $48,000.

So if you have not donated yet, please go to
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your pledge. From
there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card
using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do
send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged
about $50 a time to convert currency (no such problems with a credit
card).

Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your
pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will
be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be
able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit
earlier. The address to send cheques is as follows:

The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
c/o Helen Aristar-Dry
Dept. of English
Eastern Michigan University
Ypsilanti, MI
USA 48197

As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.

Don't forget that in return for a donation of $25 or more, we would
like to send you a gift. This year, we introduced LINGUIST List tote
bags, which are proving popular thanks to their style, space and
sturdy construction. If you don't have anything to put in them, why
not get a LINGUIST List T-shirt too? Please visit
http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html to see what we have to offer.
Do let us know in your pledge what you would like and remember to
include your mailing address.

We at LINGUIST really do appreciate your support. We could not
continue without you.

With our sincere thanks,

The LINGUIST Crew:

Anthony, Helen, Andrew, Karen, Naomi, Heather, James, Michael,
Zhen-Wei, Richard, Karolina, Dina, Renee, Steve, Marie, Gayathri,
John, Ljuba, Terry, Simin, Tomoko.
