METHODS XI: Eleventh International Conference on Methods in
Dialectology

5-9 August 2002, University of Joensuu, Finland

THIRD CIRCULAR (15 APRIL 2002)

Abstracts and papers

Our call for papers was met with great enthusiasm in all parts of the world,
and the participants can now look forward to an exciting programme
consisting of well over 200 papers, workshop presentations or posters. The
abstracts for all of these are available on the conference website, and the
presenters have been notified of acceptance by e-mail.

Plenary speakers

The invited speakers are Peter Auer (Freiburg), Jenny Cheshire (London),
Ruth King (York, Toronto), Tapani Lehtinen (Helsinki) and Dennis Preston
(Michigan). See the conference website for abstracts of their papers.

Programme

The provisional programme is displayed on the conference website. It will be
revised whenever the need arises. Please note the early start of the workshops
on Recording and Analyzing of Linguistic Data on SUNDAY, 4 AUGUST,
AT 14.00 HRS. These workshops consist of eight 1,5-hour sessions, with five
of them running parallel with the other conference sessions on Monday and
Tuesday. They are open to all delegates and, by special arrangement, to
Finnish postgraduate students working under the auspices of LANGNET,
The Finnish Postgraduate School for Language Studies. The Organising
Committee of Methods XI acknowledge the financial assistance received
from LANGNET.

Workshops and poster sessions

The programme includes as many as 9 workshops (including 1 panel
discussion and 1 special session) and 13 posters, all of which are displayed
on the conference website. Presenters of posters have been provided with
practical guidelines, which should be carefully observed because of rigid
space limitations.

Conference venue

The conference will be held on the main campus of the University of
Joensuu, which is within an easy walking distance from all of the hotels. A
campus map is available on the University of Joensuu website. All events
will take place in the Carelia Hall Building ('Y1' on the campus map) and the
Agora Building ('Y2' on the map).

Travel information

Joensuu can be easily reached by air via Helsinki (flight-time about 1 hour),
and there are several trains per day from Helsinki, Tampere and Turku.
Please note that the flights on Sunday 4 August and 11 August may be
heavily booked, so early booking is highly recommended. For those
travelling by car or coach, the roads from Helsinki or the other major ports
offer a beautiful journey through some of the best parts of the Finnish
Lakelands (the average driving time from Helsinki is 56 hours).

who have no easy access to the Internet. Please note the deadline of 31 MAY
for the early booking discount.

Conference dinner

The conference dinner will take place at the Riverside Restaurant of the Hotel
Kimmel on Thursday evening, 8 August. For booking, see the Registration
form.

Reception

There will be a reception hosted jointly by the City of Joensuu and the
University of Joensuu on Monday evening, 5 August, at the City's Art
Museum.

Excursions

A. Conference excursion

The conference programme will include an excursion to the Koli National
Park, which is situated some 75 kilometres north of Joensuu. Renowned for
its nature and "national landscape", with magnificent views over Lake
Pielinen, it has provided a source of inspiration for some of the best-known
Finnish artists and composers, including Pekka Halonen, Eero Jaernefelt, and
Jean Sibelius. This excursion will take place on Wednesday afternoon, 7
August, setting off at 13.00, and is free of charge for those who have paid the
conference fee.

B. Post-conference tours

After the conference, on Saturday 10 August, the delegates will have an
opportunity to take part in two alternative post-conference tours, each lasting
for one day:

(i) Excursion to the Old Valamo Monastery and Sortavala, Russia

This one-day excursion has as its destination the Russian Orthodox
monastery of Valamo in the northern part of Lake Ladoga. It will be done by
chartered coach and by ferry, and it will include a sight-seeing tour of the
formerly Finnish town of Sortavala in Russian Karelia. The fee of 140 Euro
will cover full board and the services of professional guides during the trip.
Participants are reminded that, since Valamo is in Russia, they will need
valid PASSPORTS and VISAS. It should be noted that, under the current
regulations concerning travel into the Russian Federation, each delegate and
accompanying person(s) should acquire the required documents well in
advance in their country of residence, i.e. BEFORE coming to Finland.

When signing up for this excursion, please provide us with the following
personal details in exactly the same form as they appear in your passport:
-full first and second names;
-date of birth;
-passport number;
-citizenship.

In addition, we will need your FAX number. After receiving the required
information, we will send you a confirmation of your booking and a
VOUCHER by fax. Armed with these documents, you should then turn to
your local travel agent who will help you to submit your application for the
visa.

(ii) Excursion to the Ruunaa Rapids, Lieksa

This excursion is also a one-day trip to the Ruunaa Rapids, which are situated
some 150 kilometres north-east of Joensuu in a largely uninhabited border
area. The unspoilt nature of this area has made it a popular venue for
shooting the rapids. The participants will travel in specially-designed wooden motor-
boats, each carrying some 15 persons. Professional drivers and guides will
guarantee an exciting, but entirely safe, passage through six wild streams and
interconnecting waterways, the total length of which is 23 kilometres (c. 14
miles). The boat trip will include a substantial traditional-style meal,
enjoyed in the wilds by the fireside. NO passports, visas or any other documents are
needed for this tour. The price of this tour is 85 Euro. For signing up, see the
Registration form on the conference website.

We look forward to seeing you in Joensuu in August 2002.
