CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT

"Manipulation in the Totalitarian Ideologies of the 20th Century"

Monte Verità, Ascona (Switzerland)
29/9 - 3/10, 2002

THEME

The aim of this conference is to bring together researchers on
manipulative discourse in order to share their views and to compare
the methodologies they use to define, capture and analyse manipulation
through language use. The topic of the conference involves a specific
attention to ideological discourse within totalitarianism in the 20th
century, although a few talks will address related issues. The
conference has a cross-disciplinary goal: speakers will not only
include linguists but also historians, journalists and political
scientists.

VENUE

The conference will be hosted by the "Stefano Franscini Centre" of
Monte Verità, Ascona (http://www.csf-mv.ethz.ch/). The Centre, located
in the scenic environment of the hills surronding Lake Maggiore is
able to offer high quality accomodation at moderate costs.

ORGANIZATION

The conference is organized by the Institute of Linguistics and
Semiotics of the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the University of
Lugano, USI http://www.lu.unisi.ch/com/ and by the international
journal Studies in Communication Sciences http://www.scoms.ch/, with
the support of the Center "Stefano Franscini".

Registration for a limited number of listeners (15 maximum) is open.

Deadline for registration: september, 18th, 2002.

The participation and accommodation fee, which includes full board
accommodation at Monte Verità Centre (inclusive of meals) for the
duration of the conference, is of 650 Swiss Francs (approx. 440 Euros
/ Dollars).

CONFERENCE GRANTS

Eight grants each covering expenses up to 1000 Swiss francs
(approx. 680 Euros / Dollars) are offered to students. 2 are reserved
to post-doctoral researchers, 3 to PhD students, and 3 to
undergraduate / graduate students.

Deadline for reception of applications: september 10th, 2002.

- a short presentation of their current research
- a proof of status (a letter from their supervising professor with
contact information or any other relevant information that can be
