Letter-Writing Matters: Practices and Styles of Epistolary
Communication, 1450-1850

Announcing a workshop on early correspondence to be organized in
connection with the "Organization in Discourse II: The Historical
Perspective" conference (Turku, Finland, August 7-11, 2002). The
workshop is convened by Terttu Nevalainen (University of Helsinki) and
Sanna-Kaisa Tanskanen (University of Turku).

Papers are invited for a thematic session entitled Letter-Writing
Matters, dealing with various linguistic and discourse features of
early correspondence, across the centuries and across languages.

The study of early letter-writing not only tells us about the
development and practices of a genre, but also about everyday language
use and language variation and change. Early correspondence has
therefore emerged as an important object of study within the field of
historical sociolinguistics and pragmatics.

This thematic session will provide a forum for discussion to
researchers interested in the practices and styles of early
correspondence. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the
various contextual (social as well as other external) factors
affecting epistolary language and style; the features defining letters
as a genre and their development; and the practices and conventions in
letters by specific groups of writers.

Please contact the conveners about abstract submission and other
information. The deadline for 500-word abstracts is 31 March, 2002.

Historical Studies of Scientific Discourse

Announcing a workshop on the history of scientific discourse to be
organized in connection with the "Organization in Discourse II: The
Historical Perspective" conference (Turku, Finland, August 7-11,
2002). The workshop is convened by Françoise Salager-Meyer
(Universidad de Los Andes) and Ellen Valle (University of Turku).

In connection with the Turku conference, a workshop will be organized
on historical studies of scientific discourse. The main focus will be
on natural philosophy, natural history and medical science in the
Early Modern period and the 'long eighteenth century', but other
periods are of course also of interest. The primary theoretical focus
will be on 'thick', 'situated' descriptions of scientific discourse as
a cultural/ textual practice within a particular discourse
community. Scientific discourse includes both public discourse,
i.e. scientific books, articles, and papers read at meetings of the
academies of science and other formal and informal groups, and private
or semi-private discourse, such as for instance letters circulating
among correspondence networks. Possible topics include on the one
hand such global aspects as the development of scientific genres, text
macrostructure, or the construction of a scientific community in the
text, on the other hand more specific and 'local' features of the
texts such as the use of citations or the pragmatics of hedging and
politeness.

Please contact the conveners about abstract submission and other
information. The deadline for 500-word abstracts is 31 March, 2002.
