COGNITIVE SCENARIOS OF COMMUNICATION ACROSS LANGUAGES AND CULTURES

September 23-27, 2002
Crimea, Ukraine

Taurida National University (Department of Russian Language) and
Saint-Petersburg State University (Department of Mathematical,
Structural and Applied Linguistics) are pleased to announce the
conference "Cognitive Scenarios of Communication Across Languages and
Cultures" (CSC'2002), to be held on September 23-27, 2002 at one of
the Crimean seaside holiday resorts.

The conference aims to continue the tradition set by previous
cognitive-science events in the Crimea: "East- West: New informational
Technologies in Education" (1994), "Cognitive Processes in Language
Communication: Theory and Applications" (1995), "Cognitive Strategies
of Language Communication" (1998), "Cognitive Scenarios of Language
Communication" (2001). The purpose of the conference is to bring
together a wide variety of research on linguistics, psychology,
sociology, communication studies, neurology, and computer science and
provide a forum for scholars to present and discuss their work in the
crosscultural and crosslinguistic perspectives.

Papers are invited from all contributing disciplines within cognitive
science as well as from social sciences and arts. We encourage a broad
view of communication which is not limited to language. However,
special emphasis will be given to theoretical and applied research
into interactions between language and cultural, psychological, and
communicative constraints.

TOPICS OF INTEREST include (but are not limited to):
- Symbolism in language and culture;
- Cognitive and communicative models of discourse;
- Discourse structures in the mass media;
- Major concepts of cognitive linguistics: cognitive and mental
models, mental spaces, frames, scripts, scenes and scenarios, etc.;
- Conceptual metaphors and metonymies across languages and cultures;
- Conceptualization of space in different languages and cultures;
- Scenarios of interpersonal and social interaction;
- Non-verbal communication and its scenarios;
- Virtual communication in the Web space.

ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION:
The working languages are Russian, English, and Ukrainian. Speakers
will be given 20 minutes to present their paper, followed by 10
minutes for discussion. We invite interested researchers to submit
abstracts (about 750 words). The deadline for abstracts submissions is
April 15, 2002. All contributions are to be made electronically, as a
plain ASCII-file attachment. Along with the abstract, please provide
the following information:
- the title of the paper;
- first and last name(s) of the author(s);
- affiliation, position and degree of the author(s);
- postal address, contact phone number, and e-mail address of the
author(s);
- one of the topics listed above to which your paper refers;
- mode of participation (paper or poster).

VENUE:
The conference will take place in one of the Crimean seaside holiday
resorts. The Crimea is a peninsula in the Black Sea known for its mild
and healthy climate, warm sea, and delicious wine. September in the
Crimea is considered the best time in the year, with average daytime
temperature of about 20-25 degrees Centigrade.  Accomodation will be
provided in a holiday hotel by the seashore.
