JANUARY 20-24, 2003

The Center of Applied Linguistics of the Santiago de Cuba's branch of
the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, is pleased to
announce the Eight International Symposium on Social
Communication. The event will be held in Santiago de Cuba January 20th
through the 24th, 2003. This interdisciplinary event will focus on
social communication processes from the points of view of Linguistics,
Computational Linguistics, Medicine, Voice Processing, Mass Media, and
Ethnology and Folklore.

Activities that will take place within the event are:

- Pre-Symposium seminars

- Discussion of papers in commissions

PRE-SYMPOSIUM SEMINARS

The Symposium will be preceded by two seminars that will be taught by
prestigious specialists to be announced. The seminars will take place
Monday, January 20th of 2003 and will focus on the following subjects:

- Corpus Linguistics: current studies

- Construction of Electronics Dictionaries

Participants should say in advance what pre-symposium seminars they
want to take part in. An additional fee of 20.00 USD will be charged
for each seminar.  Participation certificates will be available.

ROUND TABLE

A round table entitled Current Researches in Applied Linguistics will
be held on the occasion of the VIII International Symposium on Social
Communication.

MASTER LECTURES

During the Symposium three master lectures will be delivered by
prestigious specialists to be announced.

ABSTRACTS

The deadline of submission of paper abstracts is July 1st, 2002. They
should not exceed 250 words. Notification of acceptance of a paper by
the Symposium's Scientific Committee will be sent before July 30th,
2002.

PAPERS

To enable the Organizing Committee to include the Proceedings as part
of the Symposium's documentation -as we did in the 5th ('97), 6th
('99) and 7th (2001) Symposiums-, accepted papers must be sent before
September 15, 2002, with the following requirements:

1. The paper will not exceed 5 pages including graphics, footnotes and
bibliography.

2. It should be written using Word 6.0 or Word 7.0 for Windows and
sent to the Symposium's Executive Secretary either via e-mail
(attachment) or by mailing a 3"-inch diskette.

3. Each page must be written in an A4 (mail type) format with left,
right, top, and bottom margin of 2.5 cm.

4. The paper must be written in one of the event's official languages:
Spanish, English, French or Portuguese.

Instructions for paper submission:

1. Write down the authors' names, one under the other, at the left top
of the first page, all in Arial bold capital letters, 9 points (Word
6.0 or 7.0). Under the authors' names should appear in bold (only
initials capital letters) the institution, city, country and e-mail
address if available.

2. In a separate line, at the center, the title of the paper must be
written in Arial bold, Italics, 10 points size letters.

3. The text will follow -not in bold- with the same Arial letter, 9
points size and leaving one space between lines.

4. Paragraphs will have no indentation.  Spaces between paragraphs
will be of 3 points.

5. Section titles will be written in Arial bold, 9 points size and
sub-sections titles will be written in Arial Italic, 8 points size.

6. Footnotes will appear at the end of each page in Arial 8 points
size letters.

Presentation time will be 15 minutes and 5 minutes for discussion.

Authors must advise in advance if they will need a tape recorder,
video set, computer or other kind of equipment for presentation.

Santiago de Cuba, located at some 900 kms from Havana, is Cuba's
second largest city. Its economic, cultural and social importance in
Cuban history is unquestionable.  Santiago is also the capital of the
province with the same name.  Surrounded by the green mountains of the
Sierra Maestra range and the Caribbean Sea, Santiago is unique in its
geography and beautiful landscape. Its surroundings make the city one
of the most important tourist attractions on the entire island. The
Organizing Committee, in coordination with the city's tourist agencies

		 3rd SIGdial Workshop on Discourse and Dialogue

		Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 11 and 12, 2002
		   (Just following the 40th Anniversary ACL)

Continuing with a series of successful workshops in Hong Kong and
Denmark, this workshop will span the ACL and ICSA SIGdial interest
area of discourse and dialogue.  This series provides a regular forum
for the presentation of research in this area to both the larger
SIGdial community as well as researchers outside this communicty.  The
workshop is organized by SIGdial, which is sponsored jointly by ACL
and ICSA.

Topics of Interest

We welcome formal, corpus-based, implementational and analytical work
on discourse and dialogue, with a focus on the following three themes:

(1) Dialogue Systems
       Spoken, multi-modal, and text/web based dialogue systems
       including topics such as: dialogue management models (specific
       subproblems or general modeling, in particular models for mixed
       initiative and user-adaptive dialogue); speech, text, and
       graphics integration (for understanding or generation);
       contextual interpretation of dialogues and/or response
       planning, in particular how this contributes to natural
       interaction; strategies for handling or preventing
       miscommuncation (repair and correction types, clarification and
       underspecificity, grounding and feedback strategies); utilizing
       prosodic information for various types of disambiguation;
       task-driven versus conversational dialogue; evaluation of
       dialogue systems including task complexity measurements.

(2)Corpora and Corpus Tools
	Corpus-based work on discourse and spoken, text-based and
	multi-modal dialogue including its support, in particular:
	issues and problems in discourse and dialogue annotation;
	techniques (including machine learning), tools, coding schemes
	and data resources for discourse and dialogue studies;
	XML-based tools for dialogue access to internet information.

(3)Pragmatic and/or Semantic Modeling
       The pragmatics and/or semantics of discourse and dialogue
       (i.e., beyond a single sentence) including the following
       issues: the semantics/pragmatics of dialogue acts (including
       those which are less studied in the semantics/pragmatics
       framework); incremental (plan-based,topic-based, etc.) models
       of discourse/dialogue structure integrating referential and
       relational structure; modeling genre-specific aspects of
       discourse and dialogue structure, including the specific
       structural aspects of (interactive) digital media; prosody in
       discourse and dialogue; modeling politeness and non-recursive
       parts of discourse and dialogue; models of presupposition and
       accommodation; operational models of conversational
       implicature.

Workshop Format

The workshop will include a few plenary presentations of general
interest followed by thematic sessions. The thematic sessions will
combine long presentations, short presentations, and demos (as
appropriate) with extended discussions.  Highlights of the thematic
sessions will be presented in a closing session. In addition, all
participants who request space may present a poster in separate
session.

Three thematic sessions are planned:
	Annotation Methods for Corpora
	Architectures for Dialog Systems: Agent-based vs. Pipelined
	Learning and Adaptivity in Dialog Systems

Submission of Papers and Abstracts

The program committee welcomes the submission of long papers
describing theoretical contributions as well as short papers
describing ideas or project implementations.

Long papers must be no longer than 10 pages, including title page,
examples, references, etc. In addition to this, two additional pages
are allowed as an appendix which may include extended example
discourses or dialogues, algorithms, graphical representations, etc.

Short papers should aim to be 4 pages or less (including title page,
examples, references, etc.)

Both long papers and short papers should be sent electronically to the
e-mail address: sigdial2002 at uiah.fi and must be received no later than
March 15.

The format to use for papers and abstracts is the same (ACL final
paper format).  Stylefiles are available at
http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~lindek/acl02/style/.  Papers must be
submitted in pdf format.

The title page (no separate title page is needed) should include the
following information:

           Title:
           Authors' names, affiliations, and email addresses;
           Preferred thematic session, if any.
           Abstract (short summary up to 5 lines);
