The School of Literature and Language Studies wishes to appoint a
permanent HALF-time lecturer in Linguistics with specialisation in
sociolinguistics. The appointee should have expertise in as many of the
following areas as possible:
synchronic regional and stylistic variation
language planning: development, policy, standardisation
diachronic change
foundational sociolinguistic theory
corpus linguistics
analytic skills in internet discourse
applied skills in multivariate statistical analysis
sociolinguistics of Sign Language.
The candidate should:
have completed the PhD degree;
exhibit evidence of active linguistic research, optimally related
to Southern Africa.
have teaching experience at a tertiary instution
be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate and coordinate
research programmes at the interface of language and society.
Duties: teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, research, and
departmental duties.
Salary and Benefits: in accordance with University scales, with
excellent benefits.
